Remembrance Day marked by churches and schools with services by Rev. Armstrong and Legion members. Flags, poppy funds and assemblies raised awareness as Gloria Rody, five, was struck by a car on Mill Street and treated for injuries.
Acton to hold safety week with police, teachers, and parents. Pupils will attend daily talks and street practice, films, posters, and art focused on avoiding accidents. Elmer the Safety Elephant will fly when no injuries occur. if an accident happens, the flag is lowered for 30 days.
Mary Haig, a missionary from Japan, spoke at the Halton Presbyterian Woman's Missionary Society meeting held November 6 at Ashgrove United Church. She described postwar Japanese interest in democracy, English Bible study, and Western culture, noting Nagano church growth and gratitude for missionary aid.
A preliminary notice indicates a four stage clean up in Y city on Tuesday with classes starting the following day. Details are unclear due to OCR errors but the timing and restart of classes are noted for October.
Inez McLellan of Acton was elected president of the Guelph Presbyterial of the Presbyterian Young Peoples Union at the fall rally in Campbellville’s St. David’s church. Rev. R H Armstrong of Acton inducted officers and dedicated the Presbytery banner. Almost 100 attendees from Galt Guelph Kitchener Waterloo Baden Eden Mills and other area centers participated.
At a Brampton meeting, Bob Byrne of Milton was elected chairman of Number 9 District of the Provincial Lawn Bowling Association of Ontario. Harry Riddell of Milton will serve as district secretary treasurer, with 123 member clubs including Acton Oakville Etobicoke Weston. Byrne plans a district league where club teams visit each other once per season, aiming for a regular weekly schedule to foster fellowship and fun.
John Speight Moore died Wednesday November 5 at his home in Acton Ontario after a period of ill health. He trained in printing in Acton and Toronto before leading the United Typewriter Co printing department. He lived 30 years in Dundas with his brother Charles at the Dundas Star. Survived by wife Lillian Ross, daughter Angela Claire, and sister Mrs Fred Funk of St Joseph Michigan. Funeral at Mitson Dundas with graveside service at Fairview Acton.
The Acton Square Dance club held its first event at St Alban's parish hall on Friday November 7. Caller Ernie Packer led a four couple to demo figures with quick on floor participation. Door prize went to Cliff Sutton after a second draw. spot prize to Miss Jean Kirby. old-time waltz winners were Mr and Mrs Fred Kingsmill.
The Lakeside chapter annual bazaar featured draws for a handmade quilt, dishes, a radio, and a tobop pan with several table prizes. Winners included Mrs George Hoswman for the quilt and Miss Eveleen Braida for the dishes, as well as individual table prizes like a doll to Sharon Bradley and a crib quilt to Mrs. Violet Metz-Ber Retchener.
A joint meeting of the Sewer Committee and the Public Utilities Commission approved a town operation by law. The by law was read and accepted after amendments. When passed by the council the PUC will take charge of operation and maintenance of the sewerage system.
The Y Ladies Auxiliary met on Monday at the Y to plan a Phalanx club and high school rugby team dinner. Mrs. Paul read a report on the Midland conference. Mrs. Sutton and Mrs. Hunter noted many Acton merchants donated items for the penny sale. A Christmas party was arranged for the next meeting.
Rev. E. A. Currey former Canadian forces chaplain spoke at Acton Rotary Remembrance Day meeting. He recounted personal war impressions and friendships formed. Veterans John Henry William Middleton and J. B. Chalmers attended as guests. A wreath of poppies hung above the head table. Business discussions were minor.
The Everton community extends sympathy to the family of the late Mr Percy Smith who died early Sunday. Sunday visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs John Alton included Mr and Mrs Albert Alton and others. Additional visits and stays are noted among local residents and families across Guelph Alliston Fergus Lovinville and surrounding areas.
Two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. honored Acton’s soldiers sailors and airmen who died for peace. A parade from the Legion Hall led to the cenotaph on Mill Street where wreaths from local groups and officials were laid. Memorial prayers and a Remembrance Day service followed at Knox Presbyterian Church with a tribute to both World Wars and listing the latest local fallen.
The Public Utilities Commission heard that the council will supply Baxter Laboratories Ltd with a six inch water main for sprinkler service and fire protection to run from River Street. Baxter Labs will cover total installation costs under PUC supervision. Additional items include replacing glass at pumping station and sewage plant, installing ten new water meters, and wiring upgrades. The meeting noted water use issues at Mosales Dairy and a 1000 gallon daily compensation well agreement with Anthony Hufnagel.
G W McKenzie urged Lakeside chapter L O D E members to canvass Acton residents before the December 18 19 X ray survey. He noted a 1951 province wide TB survey with a goal to halve incidence in ten years and 8000 deaths in 1980. He said 90 percent of Acton adults must be X rayed to ensure success and two cases per 1000 people are expected.
The speaker, Sandy McPherson, objects to income taxes until he learns $50 million a year funds guided missile research. He argues any man should object only if government spending isn't sensible. He praises the value of experts who could cut wasteful costs, comparing it to a golf ball improvement worth a hundred million to the nation.
Bannockburn school filled to capacity Monday evening as the community celebrated the recent marriage of Mr. Melvin McCullough and Margaret Brown. Guests presented a trilight lamp coffee table and table lamp. Mrs Stan Morrison read the address and Lloyd McEnery Ralph Denny Bert Watson spoke. Ro L Davidson chaired. Mrs George Somerville and Clayton Wilson won the progressive auction. A bounteous lunch followed with dancing to the Melody Makers.
