The annual Y M C A Penny Circus drew many youths and some girls, with stalls, games, and a parade. Boosters report over $10 raised for the summer camp fund as Benson led the boys in fun and vendors supplied refreshments and prizes.
The Nelson Boys Grain Club, Milton Holstein Calf Clubs, and Halton Jersey Guernsey Shorthorn Club met at the Farmers' Building Milton with over seventy members and parents attending. Agricultural representative A We Whitelock organized the three clubs and W B E Breckon spoke on the value of small investments building a profitable dairy herd. Officers were elected with Donald Peer as President Milton and other officers named for the three clubs.
Lakeside Chapter hosts Empire Day program at Lorne School with recitations drills and songs led by Mr Pell Mrs Robertson and Mrs Sommerville. Mr Skuce county school inspector speaks on Towle deeds in northern Ontario and Canadian unity. People vote thanks to Mrs Shaee and bouquets presented.
Worshippers at St Alban's Church noted the first of a new set of stained glass windows installed by Charlescourt Art Studios of Toronto. The Cathedral leaded design features a Lamb and a Ship with a colored border and shields, signaling Christ and the Church. Future windows will tell a comprehensive Christian story, with some to be memorials funded by parishioners.
Halton Plowmen announce their annual junior competition led by Smeath with a coaching emphasis from John Lister and Harold Picket of Hornby. Prizes will be awarded for beginners and standout youths, with coaching from noted authorities during the event. Coastal guests from Salada Tea Company expected, and Canadian plowmen celebrate Scottish and German connections.
A revised list of men from Acton and district serving in the Army Navy and Air Force is published for corrections and updates. Readers are urged to send changes to the Acton Free Press office, with details including names units and addresses, to keep the roster current.
Acton School Board viewed a lighting demonstration arranged with the Public Utilities Commission and the Lighting Service Department of the Ontario Electrical Commission. The plan seeks reduced consumer costs by upgrading fixtures. current illumination issues were noted and repairs and renovations will be considered at the next meeting.
The Acton Unit of the Halton Volunteer Civil Guards begins a new training period at the park this evening. All able bodied men are urged to attend lectures on home defence and precautionary measures including first aid gas incendiary bombs and casualty clearing. The unit formed last June has seen strong interest and plans to reorganize the Women's Section with roles for all professions.
Mr Win Heveran, manager at Easter Laboratories here, is transferred to the company’s main plants near Chicago and will begin duties soon. He will be succeeded by Mr Wm Benson, secretary of Acton YMCA, starting the first of the month. YMCA members and friends regret the severance and congratulate Benson on the appointment.
The Hoackalong Women’s Institute annual meeting at Mr. W. Passiére’s home reported satisfactory minutes and finances. Reports on flower, knitting, and sewing showed 23 quality and seven crib quilts. New officers were elected led by President Mrs. Plank.
Mr and Mrs W OD Barber of Bur dot Farm Nassagaweya celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary visiting relatives in Guelph Hamilton and Burlington. They married May 5th 1866 in Georgetown by Rev Judson Trunk the bride Eva Canute. The farm was Rattlesnake Point. A dinner in Hamilton hosted by Nellie bridesmaid sister of the bride followed a lengthy family gathering.
The annual Spring Rally of the Guelph Presbyterial W M S of the Presbyterian Church in Canada met at St. David's Church Campbellville on May 20. Mrs H L Bennie presided as president. Delegates reported to the Brockville Ontario Provincial meeting. Speakers included Mrs John A G V Hilborn Preston and Mary E Anderson recently from Japan. Additional notes came from Mrs Lo Genman from Manchuria and Mrs Hawtin from India. Acton Auxiliary members attended with numerous local ladies.
