Southwold Earthwork a Unique Indian Stronghold in Canada

The Southwold Earthwork near St. Thomas Ontario is a National Historic Site preserved by Canada’s Parks Bureau and Smithsonian officials call it the only fortification of its kind in the country. This Attiwandaronk refuge features double walls and a moat, with palisades and artifacts such as flint arrowheads bone needles and pottery. Evidence suggests ceremonial cannibalism and possible captive burnings tied to Iroquois conflicts around 1650.
