Mrs. Jean Leishman received a reward for alerting police after hearing intruders attempting to rob Acton’s post office. A letter lauded her quick action which prevented loss of cash and money orders from the Post Office department.
A meeting of the Acton Lawn Bowling Club elected W. H. Rogers president and J. Wood secretary treasurer. The ladies section chose Mrs. E Holmes president and Mrs. M Bell secretary treasurer. Greens expected ready for play on or before May 2.
Postal staff and friends gathered at Mr and Mrs Frank Terry home to honor Mrs Sonny Jacque who has left the staff. Gordon McKeown presented her with an initiated silver entree dish on behalf of all attendees.
Acton council refuses to rescind the padlock motion denying use of the town hall to the United Electrical Workers and to Communist-linked groups. A large UE delegation led by Jean Vautour urged reversal and a public apology, but the council stood firm and took no motion.
Halton councils hear Ontario Fuel Board chair A R Crozier urge prompt franchise evaluation for gas supply. Firms discuss costs for laying lines from Lambton to Acton Milton Georgetown area with 40 to 60 wells needed for reliable service.
Police report three accidents in the week along No 7 Highway area. A car driven by Wesley Hiltz of Terra Cotta struck a tree in a ditch near Sixth Line injuring Mrs Hiltz with a fractured nose and leg and sending them to Brampton hospital. Damage about $300. Deer dash near Fifth Line Esquesing hit a car driven by Herb Brown of Kitchener causing about $200 damage.
Scoutmaster David Dills and Wayne Currie will attend the eighth World Jamboree in Niagara-on-the-Lake next August. Currie’s application is accepted. attendees must be first class scouts. Over 8,400 scouts from 34 countries registered. officials expect 10,000 total.
At the final meeting of the year Acton Y's Men heard Lloyd Minshall of the Department of Education speak on community recreation. Plans for a ladies night at Hultop Lodge were made and Erin District governor G W McKenzie discussed duties for the coming year. Lorne Masters was inducted. Jack Greer resigned as a charter member. A $50 gift was voted for the Home and School piano fund. Mayon E Tyler and board members attended as guests.
Acton and other Ontario towns over 2 000 population will keep Ontario Provincial Police coverage for now after a council meeting informed by a letter that a March decision to withdraw OPP officers from larger towns has been reversed. The future policy remains unclear.
Principal G. W. McKenzie reports enrolment rising from 570 in September to 606 on Tuesday with 11 new arrivals this week. Growth tied to families moving into Glenlea and Cobble Hill subdivisions. some transfers out also occurred. More enrollments expected before spring term ends.
The Bell Telephone company reports Acton’s local calling area outgrows its rate group and may be moved to the next higher group under Board of Transport Commissioners rules. If approved, small increases would align Acton rates with other centers. examples show two party residence up 10 cents and individual residence up 15 cents, with other class rates also adjusted.
Firemen were called to Beardmore Co plant Sunday evening after a blaze started in a dust hopper near lacquer storage. Fire traced through a conduit in the finishing room, water poured through an open vent. A similar blaze erupted Jan 27 in a dust hopper, the same afternoon nearly gutting the hydraulic shop.
John Kenney will mark his 92nd birthday tomorrow at his home in Dundas Street Guelph. Acton friends and readers join in congratulation to Mr Kenney who spent most of his life in Acton and was in business here longer than any other Acton merchant.
The Decoration Day committee met April 28 in the Legion Hall with Victor Patrick re elected chairman and Mrs. Alex Orr as secretary treasurer. Representatives from Acton Woman's Institute Legion Bannockburn Institute Ministerial Association and others attended. Acton Decoration Day is set for June 5 with a goal to decorate all plots in Fairview Cemetery. 54 graves were honored last year and three more will be added this year.
Talented young Sheila Paul topped a class of six for violin solo under 18 at the Hamilton Music Festival last week and will compete at the Stratford festival on May 11.
The North Halton Urban Board accepted the resignation of engineer K. R. Simmons to be effective May 31. Georgetown with Acton and Milton will discuss continuation until then to avoid financial complications. Board members regret the outcome and plan to appoint a replacement, with next meeting set for May 25.
