Reports claim a Sunday collapse of the arena curling rink roof near Acton sparked amusement until the truth emerged. Snow had been removed from the pitch roof to a 12 foot area, wind or melt may have caused a slide, sending the roof onto the rink. Three people were killed as debris pushed outward from the arena wall.
Snow toppled the curling rink roof onto the arena at Acton on a Sunday afternoon. No one was injured as four youngsters were escorted out minutes earlier while hockey and public skating events wind down. Town officials assessed damage at five to ten thousand dollars as crews cleaned debris and secured the scene. The adjacent arena, built in 1929, suffered structural strain along the south wall, with the rest of the building largely intact.
In a united effort for Holy Week, Knox Presbyterian Church hosts Palm Sunday services with the Anglican congregation in attendance. Rev Lawrence E Mason, stewardship counsellor of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and former pastor at Paisley, Williscroft Strathroy Aylmer Fresh Church Tillsonburg and First Church Guelph, will speak on the death and suffering of Jesus Christ. The public is invited to attend and listen to his inspiring messages.
Milton Figure Skating Club presents its carnival on April 2 with Linda Braida from Acton starring Snow White. Her Prince Charming is Andrew Drenters from north of Rockwood as Milton skaters rehearse weekly with Guelph and local clubs for the production.
The first draft of Acton's 1960 budget centers on an 80 mill rate with town council controlling 22.09 mills. Education would rise by 11.27 mills, and total expenditures would lead to $433,868 to be raised by taxation after grants and receipts. The budget includes debentures for sewage, water, street paving, bridges, fire hall, and Warren Grove subdivision, with further costs for police, general government, road work, and town services. A special meeting will be held to review items and aim for finalization by March 31.

Town council spent much of the evening on insurance discussions with Bert Wood and L Morris of Western Insurance, planning an independent damages appraisal. The arena will close for the rest of the year, with roof repairs and safety measures, while insurance coverage remains limited to fire and extended lines.
Mrs A T Brown, longtime Acton resident and community volunteer, died in Hamilton General Hospital after years of declining health. Born February 25, 1872 as Cartina Walker, she led church work, Sunday school, and women’s groups. Her husband, also involved in town life, predeceased her in February 1955.
