Limehouse kilns shaped Ontario lime history in 19th century
The Limehouse lime kilns near Acton operated from the 1840s to 1931, evolving from draw to set kilns. Iron age methods used steam power, dynamite blasts, and horse-drawn carts to move stone. About 30 workers labored nine months yearly as rock rights shifted to Dominion Tar and Chemical. The Credit River Conservation Authority plans to preserve remnants for history.
