The Acton council Finance chair J Bert Wood reports a 1964 budget set at 72.9 mills for commercial and 66.8 mills for residential, the highest in town history. He warns of possible future increases tied to a new high school addition.
Town council members approved a new salary schedule for town employees and office staff. The measure includes a base rate of 40 per hour for certain operators, with raises for other staff and a fixed monthly increase for a caretaker, amid debates on wage equity and bylaw amendments.
Tony Hurst of Acton won the public school speaking final at the Robert Little School. He received the D. Rachlin trophy and a pen and pencil set amid a field of 12 contestants from Acton and nearby schools. Judges praised all participants and the trophy will stay with the winning school for a year.
Councillor Les Duby was unanimously chosen as Acton's mayor to complete the late George W. Barbeau's term after Barbeau resigned to become production manager at A. P. Green Fire Brick Company. The vacancy will be offered to Hughie Lowe, the highest polling losing candidate from the last council race.
Dr Harry Harley addressed a Brookville Hall gathering urging Liberals to win a decisive majority government. He criticized Conservatives as weak and divided, urging action on farming unemployment and labor issues while nominating Beuwe Beer of Peel County as Eastern Agriculture Minister.
Five candidates appear on the Burlington ballot for the April 8 election with nomination papers filed. Several names are confirmed as running though some signatures and party affiliations are unclear due to damaged records.
The provincial competition staged at the OAC on April 19 featured Acton junior Toren performing prominently amid Halton and Pee County participants. Wellingios altars and other county teams showed strong showings.
In Streetaville near Stewarttown a double fatality occurred when an 11 year old Wayne Keith Cotton and 16 year old Sharon Hamilton died after their car left the road at a sharp curve and struck a slat pole. Hamilton was a high school student and daughter of Mr and Mrs Melville Hamilton. The crash led to memorials and township actions including a planned meeting at the township hall on April do. The drivers were Mr and Mrs Kenneth Cotton of Orton and other residents of Stewartown and Acton.
The Planning Board approved selling park land on Mil Street East and hired Manning Associates to retire and update the study plan. They will prepare a town map and assess each property while starting a new bylaw. An application for the Canadian Tire property was received and plans for rezoning and utilities were noted.
