The final community gathering precedes the switch to a junior hockey facility on Sunday, April 2. Officials plan the transition as part of the ice plant changeover and welcome residents to participate in the event.
Spectators watched two social curling evenings with novelty prizes for top teams. Monday's winners were Bruce Cargill Shirley Hunter Audrey Cunningham and Al Kirkriess, while Tuesday early draw was Don Timmings John Buckman Allan McKenzie and Barry Buchanan and the 9 to 11 p m draw went to Mac Sprowl Mary Marks Max Storey and Tom Manes. Ken Marchment edged Andrew McKenzie 11 9 for the Bill Toth Shell trophy in Monday play and Marchment beat Meb Blow 14 8 in Tuesday final as Helen Otter Agnes Holmes and George Williams secured the victory for Blow's rink.
Scout John New demonstrates semaphore messaging as a future camp and hik es use. Eagles win patrol competition for two months, while Lion patrol seeks lead with wins in February. Semifinal play in the Industrial Ig hockey league Sunday left the Raiders and Orioles as the top two contenders for the best two out of three title series next week. The Orioles beat the Jets 3 1 in a tight night, while the Raiders crushed the Dusters 7 1 to earn the final.
Rivalry match saw Fourtown, featuring town league players, overwhelm Tri County, a unit from a 13 team league. Peter Morrison led with three goals and two assists, Louttet added two, Marsh one and two assists, Gibbins, Marshall, McNabb, and Pope contributed. Tri County’s goals came from D Hunter and Chris Tennant.
Acton girls soccer? basketball team traveled to Milton for CWOSS A B championship. Durham defeated Acton 32 to 19 after leading 12 1 at halftime. Landsborough and Slingerland led scoring with eight each. Duby and Larsen added small totals. Durham beat Chesley in the final for a third straight title. Coach Atkey praised sportsmanship and outlined roster changes with several seniors leaving and hope for a strong next season.
Buffalo Bantam and Rochester Pee Wee teams opened the Legion Town League playoffs with tight action. The Bisons tied Hershey 2-2 in the opener, then fell 3-2 the next night. In Pee Wee, Cleveland Baron Morisson led a 5-2 win over Rochester, scoring a hat trick and assisting one.
Bernie Taylor scored four goals to lift Niagara Falls to a 5 3 victory in Novice playoff action. Bill McKenzie added a goal and three assists, with St Catharines’ John Hansen Wayne Allen also scoring. Oshawa routed Hamilton 8 1 as David Allen tallied five times and Bill Vivian Baginski added two and one assists. Micro Plastics overwhelmed Brampton CTC 7-2 last Sunday in Georgetown. Ed Hillier earned the hat trick with help from brothers Dan and Harvey Hillier. Ron Schmidt and George Greenwood added extra Micro markers for the victors.
Acton Novice All-Stars have kept busy since dropping two straight to Milton in the Tri-County playoffs. They defeated Georgetown 4-town novices 10 with Ken Withers scoring the lone goal from Jeff Townsley, then beat Wingham 5-2 in Mount Forest with Russ Van Fleet scoring twice and Withers, McIntyre, and McGilloway adding singles. Jim Hurley, Ken Withers, and John McCutcheon assisted. In the afternoon Acton fell 3-0 to Waterloo despite solid effort as breaks favored Waterloo. The team has added Bernie Taylor, Kevin Marcoux, John Hansen, and Robin Inscoe, replacing Peter Swim. Next game is Sunday at 3:45 at home against Listowel.
Over 500 boys on 36 teams begin the ninth annual Tri County Juvenile Tournament in Milton. First four days feature matchups across divisions with Stoney Creek, Acton, Whitby, Richmond Hill, Brantford, Brampton, Woodbridge, Orangeville and others on the opening schedule.
More than 100 friends and fellow officers marked the departure of Corporals Bill Bennett and Tom Dube and Constable Wilf Griffiths from the Milton OPP detachment at a stag in Milton. Gifts were presented, speeches lauded their service, and each man outlined his next post with Brantford Burlington and Douglas Aircraft security.
New details emerge about Limehouse history after last week’s Free Press feature on the old kilns. Mrs. William Mitchell and her cousin Charles Meredith, both Limehouse residents, are great grandchildren of John Meredith who first surveyed the district and is buried in Limehouse Cemetery. The surveyor arrived in Canada with United Empire Loyalists, his family settled in Niagara, he fought for Britain, and received a land grant at Limehouse in 1817. Charles Meredith still possesses his ancestor’s sword.
Informative facts about life in the Arctic were told to Lions club members Monday evening by high school vice principal Joe Bray. He spoke of three summers of Arctic work on scientific research and shared slides on his experiences for the country and its hardy inhabitants.
The Acton curling team defeated Milton 105 in the district playoffs and advance to the finals against Georgetown later this week. The lineup includes skip Gordon Reid vice Allan McKenzie second Barry Buenen and lead Paul Youngblut. Georgetown had a bye.
A community ice program lists events at Acton Arena. On Wednesday March 15 Speyside Public School from noon to 2, Mothers and Pro School Children 2 to 3, Figure Skating Club 5 to 6, Legion Minor Hockey 6 to 8, Industrial Hockey 8 to 11. Saturday March 16 Figure Skating Curling from 8 to 12. Tuesday March 21 Public School Ice Carnival at 6:30 pm.
