Lyons Resigns Cabinet Post Over Government Contracts

Hon. Jas. Lyons resigns from the Landa and Forests portfolio in the Ferguson Government after stating his Lyons Fuel and Supply Co cannot refuse orders from government contractors. He remains in the House. the Premier assumes his department duties.

God in Revelation Sermon on United Church Doctrinal Basis

Rev. R. E. Zimmerman delivered the second sermon in a series on the United Church doctrinal basis. He explained that God has revealed Himself through nature history and the heart of man and that Jesus Christ is the culmination of divine revelation in Scripture as the inspired rule of faith. He argued the Bible is a true faithful revelation and the church’s belief rests on God’s self disclosure rather than human invention.

Examinations Set For June Across Ontario Schools

The Department of Education announced dates for departmental exams. Middle and Upper School start June 21, Lower School June 25, and High School Entrance June 28. Also noted are local reports on a hand injury at Public School and first aid by Scouts Norman Hinton and Arthur Lawson.

Siren Fire Alarm Test Planned and Town Council Notes

The council session covered finance payments for town accounts and hydro electric work, adoption of a report, and proposals from the Women's Institute for a park booth. Controversy arose over hall use by religious groups, a steam siren trial at Beardmore plant was authorized, and by law enforcement was instructed to enforce dog bylaws.

Acton Hewetson Shoe Employees Hold Annual Social Evening

Acton Hewetson Shoe Company workers and guests enjoyed a full evening of entertainment supper and dancing at Town Hall last Friday. Chairman F E B McCleary and new manager Inrick opened with remarks as a varied program featured Miss Joan Wedge on piano and solos by William Coleman Miss Richardson and Ernest Coles. The McGechie children and the Baptist Male Quartette performed, with sketches and a humorous chorus led by Acton Beauties including Missex Coleman and D McDougall. The show closed with a dance to Harry Negley’s syncopators, followed by a light supper and late dancing. The Hewetson staff are famed for their lively events and this night was no exception. The late Sarah McDougall’s estate was left to FE J Lyle via Kerr’s Road Estate.

Coal trade reports anthracite imports to Toronto from Scranton with price adjustments for Pocahontas and coke. dealers anticipate April 1 price breaks in hard coal.

Excursion to Toronto brings Acton crowd and first aid awards

The Canadian National Electric Railways excursion from Acton to Toronto drew about 150 residents. The 7 p.m. departure, program at West Toronto Assembly Hall, and post event dancing preceded a 1:46 a.m. return. First aid certificates were distributed to road employees, and local agents spoke, with Mr Thetford of Acton delivering a thanks and remarks.

James Symon Elected President of Acton Chamber

The Acton Chamber of Commerce annual meeting elected James Symon as president for 1926 with C. H. Harrison and E. J. Hassard as officers. R. M. McDonald thanked members, and a push for new membership, railway rate talks, and a wider rural exchange was endorsed. A talk by S. C. Raymond on industries may be arranged for March.

A strong Canadian syndicate led by the Bank of Montreal Royal Bank of Canada Canadian Bank of Commerce Wood Gundy Dominion Securities Ames National City markets a 45 million 4 percent bond issue due February 1 1946 offered at 97 and interest yielding about 4 78 percent. Meanwhile twilight gloom sweeps the scene with fading light and silver dreams.
