Acton Council approves an organization chart placing the Clerk Administrator above three departments. Names are assigned to the new town staff, including the Works Superintendent and Office Manager. Water and sewer chair J Newton discusses the water supply issues and the slow response from OWRC and Emergency Measures Organization.
Town officials announce surface runoff contamination of the Churchill Road water supply. A high chlorine treatment is being pumped into the system for 24 hours to sterilize the network and restore safe drinking water. Public notices urge residents to boil water until tests confirm safety.
Salary increases were approved for city staff including $200 per year for the Clerk Administrator $150 per year for the office manager $100 per week for the Work Superintendent and $50 per week for the clerk stenographer. A $100 per year raise was granted to a worker who will not take regular weekend shifts at the sewage and water plants. No other raises were granted beyond the pension participation begun at the start of the year.
The county council sent the voting power issue to the legislation committee to address imbalances where northern towns hold fewer votes than southern areas despite higher assessments and lower population. Burlington Trifalgar Oakville each have four votes while Nelson township and Bronte lost votes. The panel will consider petitions for county voting by ratepayers. James C. Andrews of Oakville was chosen as assistant county clerk starting March 20 at no salary. The council also discussed electing high school trustees, short term financing for the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, and debentures for Bell Gouin koo and Co. The Oakville Historical Society offered help to establish a County Museum, awaiting definite recommendations.
Acton Lions Club postponed an Ice carnival due to soft ice. The event aims to raise funds for an artificial ice plant with tickets on sale for a draw offering a trip to New York and $50 spending money. Galt Skating Club and local stars along with Acton Junior Pipe Band will perform. A large crowd is expected.
Halston County Council sanctioned a new county wide industrial commission. Trafalgara industrial director Ron Cooksley urged a committee of industrial spokesmen from ecac municipality and a low cost county information brochure. He said each new plant reduces county burden and could promote the county as an excellent industrial location. Councillors agreed industry is valuable and supported sharing leads between municipalities.
Ontario Water Resources Commission officials said heavy chlorine flow into the town water system would continue until tonight and shut off completely by Friday morning. Homeowners were advised to run taps after 6 am tonight for a short period to ease the household system. They hope the two day sterilization will restore normal water supply and citizens will be notified by sound truck when to stop using water for household use.
An Acton family and four children lost their home when a Sunday morning blaze destroyed most possessions and left their two story Main Street dwelling uninhabitable. Firefighters initially feared a trapped 1 year old girl but she later joined relatives nearby. The Wilkinsons moved in with the Storey family near Ospringe while the building, owned by Jack McMullen, is assessed for repair.
Over 200 attended the Night School display at the High School auditorium featuring a fashion show, lucky draw, and students work. Leathercraft handbag prize won by Mrs. G. Osmond. professor Weal demonstrated rose growing. Courses listed include bookkeeping French flower arranging leathercraft motor mechanics and sewing. Milk bottle thefts reported on Bower Ave and nearby Mi SiH streets with bottles containing money targeted.
