Acton Band Wins Waterloo Festival Trophy
Acton Citizens Band led by Bandmaster Walter Mendham won top honors at the Waterloo Festival in the second year of competition earning a silver trophy and gold medals for each member. Acton placed first with 91 percent, Scarborough Township second, Walkerton third, and Paris fourth. twenty three band members performed in Class 4 with teams from Port Elgin and Mount Forest also listed.

Nassagaweya Sunday Schools Hold Annual Convention
The Nassagaweya Township Sunday Schools held their annual convention at St. David's Presbyterian Church Campbellville on Monday at 2 PM. Rev Norman son and Rev W D Clark spoke on Sunday School issues while music featured Nos 10 and 3 choruses and duets by several local performers. Officers elected for 1940 include President Edson and Vice President C Service. Reporters from Ebenezer United St David's Christie Mission Nassagaweya Presbyterian and St John's Anglican submitted reports. A resolution urged robust temperance education among youth.

Miss Margaret Brown hosted the Lakeside Chapter 10.D.E. picnic on June 22. A crowd of about 45 enjoyed lunch, games, gifts for Miss Isabel Bruce, a bridal bower, a pink and green kitchen gift table, and a pinx and silver bride’s cake. Severe Electric Storm Strikes Acton Homes
A severe electric storm and torrential rain struck Acton last night causing extensive damage. Lightning hit the Gibbons residence on Main Street starting two fires that the fire brigade battled amid heavy rain and air shortages. W. Cooper’s nearby house was struck but did not catch fire. Flooding overwhelmed sewers and damaged Hydro equipment with transformers blown and many fuses affected. Superintendent Wilson notes record interruptions in service.

Churchill’s 101st Anniversary Observed at Local Church
Congregations gathered Sunday at Churchill to celebrate its 101st anniversary with earnest sermons by Rev. Chas Joliffe who is leaving for a new charge near Hamilton. Prominent Farmer Fatally Injured Unloading Hay
Basil Johnston, a well known farmer from near Acton, was killed when a load of hay toppled as his son Elwood hauled it. Johnston fell from the hay, fracturing his skull, and died minutes later. Coroner Stuart will decide on an inquest. Johnston served as Acton Agricultural Society director and United Church board member.
