Town officials seek resident input following a wave of vandalism that targets public property including a cemetery, library lights, street signs, and ornamental stones. Police urge citizens to report evidence to curb further acts and protect taxpayers.
Acton's Pride Musselle, conductor, and pianist George Hall present a winter program at 8 o clock on Notre Notre Dame day. July 2 and July 3 schedule includes 5 30 Monday July 3. They return featuring J M Steefe and Roy Burting of Kalamazoo Michigan.
The committee urged acceptance of a Planning Board resignation amid legal disputes over the Act. J McGeachie accused the recommendation of contravening rules as council cannot form a majority on the board with the mayor ex-officio. The issue was sent back to the committee while Drinkwalter noted a recommendation was initially rejected then backed later. Reeve Hinton labeled Drinkwalter out of order after council had acted.
In a centennial progress edition, Free Press previews Acton improvements amid a heated dispute between Mayor and Councillor Drinkwalter over planning board actions. They clash over who bears responsibility, calls for reconsideration, and the town’s burden on ratepayers as they defer decisions.
At their regular meeting last night Acton Council authorized payments totaling 9 631 42 and 70 52 for a centennial library plaque and financial statement nine. The council recognized Choraliers and Herman Freuler with a centennial medal and granted the Chamber of Commerce use of Mill Street land for a fall fair trap shooting contest. They advised the Decoration Day committee about erecting a fence at Pioneer Cemetery and approved a tag day for the I C C E. Read letters from M Z Bennett and Robert Little schools about safety patrols. A traffic survey was planned for the industrial road and parking space permit was given to W Waterhouse on town property. Third reading of zoning by law deferred to Aug first meeting, with July and August council meetings reduced to July 25 and August 15. Decisions on Pentecostal church variance were unresolved after two losing motions. Planning Board resignations were accepted per No 1 committee recommendation, opposed by Councillor Drinkwalter. Ontario Housing Corporation survey for serviced land and later geared-to-income family rental housing were authorized. Acton Development Commission was asked to reconsider a site for industrial advertising signs.
Miss Bennett, long time leader of Acton Friendly Circle, was honored at a centennial supper and meeting of the U C W. Two flags were presented for the church, an event attended by former pupils and members in costume. The program recalled Acton’s early church history from a log schoolhouse to the 1852 building.
Seven year old Timmy Daigle of 90 Main St North suffered a complex fracture of his left leg when he darted in front of a car near his home at 3 45 p m Saturday. He was taken to Guelph hospital by ambulance. Police said the car driven by Harold Snow of Royal York Road Toronto was slowly south on Main St as the boy darted out from his right to rejoin friends. Constable Hildreth investigated.
Centennial weekend brings changed hours with most Acton stores open Friday June 30 until 9 p.m. and closed Saturday July 1 for Dominion Day, plus their regular closed day on Monday July 3. Most stores stay open Thursday and Friday evenings until 9 p.m.
McNamara Construction Co moved a large dredge into Fairy Lake to test capacity as 12 firms obtain plans for the dredging project. The Credit Valley Conservation Authority backs the plan to widen storage for Fairy Lake, with 75 percent of costs funded by the province and 25 percent by the Authority. The work aims to remove silt and weeds to improve water flow into Black Creek and restore spring flow. Mayor Duby and Clerk Geachie note lack of town awareness and plan a meeting with the Authority.
