Acton Police Court heard 38 cases this Tuesday under Police Magistrate K Langdon. Fines totalled 64 dollars with costs 215.50 and overall 679.50 in penalties. Liquor Act charges cost 100 dollar minimums for two, plus 15 and 11 dollars for intoxication cases.
About 125 Milton and Acton High School students traveled by three buses to Queenston Heights Brack's Monument and the whirlpool then to Oakes gardens for lunch. They crossed the border into the United States at Niagara Falls to view the illuminated falls and returned home via different routes stopping for a meal in Burlington.
The June promotion list for Acton High School shows grade by grade results with honors and non honors divisions. Promoted students include Janice Baker Nancy Lambert Jutta Kril Betty Mae Lambert Francis Heffernan Ruth Smith and others with conditional promotions noted for various subjects.
The corner stone for the new St Alban's Parish Hall was laid in a brief ceremony led by Very Rev. W F Jackson. A large congregation filled Hamilton's chairs, with clergy from Knox Church United Church and Hamilton Beach present. The rector noted thirty six men aided in building, and thanks were given to T Cooke for the stone gift and Nicol for engraving.
A skidding car nearly hit three year old Jackie Black on the Mill and Young Streets corner last Saturday at 7 10 p m. Driver James Baynton was charged with drunk and careless driving. Passenger Edmund Knewall pleaded guilty to drunkenness and was fined. Baynton was remanded until July 13. P C William Todd investigated.
Last Thursday and Friday afternoons the mothers and friends of the kindergarten pupils attended a concert at the public school. Under Miss Jo McPhail and Miss Dorothy Capper the children performed The Visit to the Garden with songs dances and rhythms. A singing dance Ach Ja and a dramatization of The Gingerbread Man followed as four rhythm band numbers closed the program.
At the regular Public Utilities Commission meeting Superintendent Lambert reported children were climbing the water tank and playing on the property. The gates are locked but they climb fences, so signs will be erected and parents asked to keep children away.
After decades of starts and delays the No. 25 highway paving from Acton to Milton is complete linking No. 7 at Mill and Mains. Main St resurfacing continues under the town street improvement program with residents of south Acton first to benefit.
Anthony Brunet was convicted on gloves theft with 44 dozen gloves valued at 2059 from Storey Glove Co and faces three months hard labor for receiving stolen goods. he also faces a five year term for a Toronto Dominion Bank robbery. Detectors recovered gloves at his premises and witnesses described the gloves found as Acton factory products.
Work began Tuesday on Acton Mill Street to lay underground cable for street lighting. A digging machine trenches for sewer mains, laying two parallel lines in an asbestos pipe. Cable will power lighting standards set on concrete slabs, with steel standards kept off the street.
Most Acton businesses will close for holidays this summer with idle periods across plants and offices. Beardmore and Co and Acton Machine Shops shift shut downs in July and August while other firms like Ajax Engineering and Wool Combing Canada plan staggered weeks off to prepare for the season.
