The council held two readings on a bylaw to restrict use and delayed final approval. Ontario Municipal Board approval for a lot sale remains pending. Costs include $800 each to Consolo and Pupo and $700 each to Lucarelli Rochi Mancini, with $1378 for removing hydro poles and culverts.
Recreation director Jim Casburn outlined summer plans and discussed curling club rates set through December 1963. Delegates from the Curling Club. Chester Anderson Lome Youngblut and John Buckman attended to explain membership charges for next season.
More than five thousand attended the 2hth anniversary observances of the First Conference of Nations of Eastern Europe and Asia, held at the Ukrainian summer camp near Acton. Speakers included Jaroslav Jetzka, president of the Anti Bolshevik Bloc and Chacen J. Kersten. Gordon Minicom secretary general. and others such as Mayor Les Duby, Immigration Minister Guy Fabreau, and Ontario figures A. E. Thompson, M P P, Toronto alderman George Ben, and Marshall Romaniuk. Ukrainian Youth Organization members paraded in grey uniforms and formed a flag raising ceremony. music came from a Chicago Ukrainian Youth Association band.
Pupils at Alde Central Public School excelled at the annual field day with four teams under captains Diane Brown Britta Larsen Gordon Dawe and David Black. Britta Laursen set records in girls high jump and standing broad jump. Irene Stokes and Margaret Slaven set softball throw and running broad jump marks. Ray Swackhamer and Michael Frame led boys events.
Bennett public schools held the first inter school field day with Bennett winning the John Weldon Imperial Oil trophy by scoring 117 points while Robert Little school tallied 76 points. Junior and senior champions are named across boys and girls events with multiple students from MZ Bennett and RL schools leading in sprints jumps and distances.
Action at Acton council focuses on a smoky dump near residences. Residents complain of unburned paper and dense smoke from private dumps ignited by smoldering fires. A proposal for a gated area or new dump site is discussed, with calls to clean up and landscape approaches to nearby town disposal plants.
Recreation director Jim Cay barn plans four complete summer playground and play school programs under Red Cross instruction. The courses run until August 24 with a daily registration starting soon. Activities include softball soccer track and field crafts games and storytelling. Fees are one dollar per child with a two dollar per family cap. Senior players teach junior members while two three week sessions divide the program.
The Pres Press features a special school’s out edition with high school results printed the same day as they appear in the mall. Public school results appear in the second section.
Sponsored by Branch 197 of the Canadian Legion, teams for Tykes Pee Wee and Bantams are lined up. After the summer session all children will perform demonstrations for parents and friends at the park on Friday. For information call crew director Jim Casburn at 9536800.
Final examination results mailed to Acton District High School students with staff compiling promotion lists. Grade 13 results expected mid August. Honor and pass standings listed for Grades 9 through 12 and 1 to 4 in fragmentary form.
Brian Barbeau a first year student in commerce and finance at the University of Toronto was named a scholar of Trinity College by Provost Dr G Owen in a letter dated Wednesday He will be advanced at a fall ceremony He had earned praise for his achievements while overcoming absences during January and February from Acton High School.
Principal Colin Lestch of Speside Central School urged grade eight students to "be a square" by working harder and taking more responsibility for future success. Diane Brown received the Acton Free Presse trophy for highest standing, presented by last year’s winner Andrew Spieve.
