Beardmore and Company Sign One Year Labor Pact
United Packinghouse Food and Allied Workers and Beardmore and Company Ltd reached a one year labor contract retroactive to December and ending in 1988. The deal adds a three cent per hour raise and introduces a job posting system with a revised seniority clause to allow transfer among plants. Union president Charles Kinganalll said the pact was ratified by workers and negotiations for a new contract were expected to start in November. The company noted a long history of amicable labor relations.

Honor Porter Employee With 50 Silver Dollars
Edward Overs received 50 silver dollars from fellow workers at the H. K. Porter plant after half a century of faithful employment as a tool and die maker. He also got a silver cigarette case and a verbal banquet from export manager George Harrap. Overs, who commuted from Toronto, began with the firm 50 years ago and is esteemed for his friendly manner. Ruben Skeets presented the coins, and Keith Livermore delivered the cigarette case on behalf of office staff.

Fairy Lake Hydroplane Regatta Draws 500 Plus Spectators
More than 500 spectators watched Acton’s first hydroplane regatta on Fairy Lake sponsored by the Us Mens Club. John Webster of Toronto won with a fast finish, speeds reached over several miles per hour, and safety was emphasized as boats capsized without injuries. Officials included Ron Robinson of Toronto as referee and Ralph Strickless of Oakville as chief starter.
