Oakville junior a Snows pitched to a 7-4 victory as Acton faded in the fifth inning scoring six runs to take the lead. Acton plans a rematch in Oakville Friday and a Milton twilight game Saturday while Waterdown visits next Wednesday. Observers note Acton’s lack of veteran presence limits their offense and confidence.
The fish derby committee meets Tuesday to set prices, admission, and plans for Acton park on Saturday July 2. Donations total $100 in prizes with no admission charge. A minor sports game and evening entertainment are planned plus a community sing. Chairman George Barbeau leads the committee.
Eleven assessors from Halton county completed a municipal assessment course run by the Association of Assessing Officers of Ontario and held at Queen's University. All passed final examinations and received certificates. Participants included E. M. A Lakeside Chapter meeting opened with Grace leading a song before a cold supper. Miss Jessie Coles reviewed highlights of a trip to England, including trips to Westminster Abbey and Scout headquarters, with souvenirs and film footage shown by Mrs. Kay Alger.
Stan Hall secure a fifth term as Halton’s M P P in a county wide showing under 50 percent turnout. Of 35 164 voters 17 382 cast ballots with a 49 7 percent turnout. Hall defeated Liberal William Anderson by 2 431 votes, while Stanley Allen of Georgetown trailed. Liberal and CCF totals shifted lower or higher from 1951 in a county with 11 municipalities.
In South Wellington the Conservative minister without portfolio W. E. Hamilton lost to Guelph mayor Harry Worton a Liberal. The Liberal win overturned a 2235 Conservative lead from 1951 to give Worton a 2214 majority. In Wellington Dufferin John Root held his seat with a larger margin defeating D D Gray. Dr. Robert Williams of the CCF won only 630 votes.
The North Halton Urban Board praised the North Halton booth at the Canadian International Trade Fair as a successful two week venture. E Tyler lauded E Barr for representing Acton and three towns, noting publicity and goodwill, while urging follow up letters to contacts and potential changes for future joint promotions.
Police report that would-be gas thieves tampered with a lock at Wockkenson’s Service Station on No 7 Highway east of here last Thursday morning. The lock was broken but no gasoline was stolen.
Rev Ralph Price and his wife hosted Acton ministers and families at the annual ministerial picnic last Friday at their Fonthill rectory in the Niagara peninsula. The group toured the countryside and church buildings, with attendees including Rev Armstrong and David, Rev and Mrs Jones, Rev and Mrs Currey, Pastor and Mrs Costerus and daughters. Mr Currey invited a return visit next year.
The Rt. Rev. W. E. Bagnall administered the laying on of hands to 30 candidates from St. Alban's Acton St. John's Rockwood and four from St. James' Guelph. Presenters were Rev. Evan H. Jones and Rev. J. B. Meloche with clerical attendees and a reception in the parish hall.
At a sparsely attended planning board meeting the town plan ner and members debated zoning issues including an industrial extension in a residential zone. The county approved the 1955 equalized assessment totaling 91 013 778 with notable increases in Oakville Burlington Trafalgar Nelson and Nassagaweya along with population totals. The council also discussed registry office space and hospital needs, and approved by laws on setback rules and a county high school board grant.
Vic Rumley spoke to Acton Rotary members about his Bermuda trip at the Tuesday gathering. Grant McDonald, formerly of Acton and now in Orangeville, attended as a guest.
Home and School Association sponsors the annual banquet for Acton public school grade eight pupils. Pastor Ray Costerus filled in as speaker after the scheduled guest was hospitalized. Awards and gifts were presented to students including Rose Berac and Jim Swackhamer for progress, with cash prizes from the LODE chapter.
The regular Pages of the Past series is interrupted this week and will resume with more columns later this summer. The series on Halton county’s early days has drawn interest and will be published as a book after the series concludes.
Five traffic accidents, three on Saturday, were summarized by district police this week. No injuries were reported. Incidents included a No. 7 Highway collision between Ian Sutherland Chatsworth and Kenneth Davidson Georgetown. a Nassagaweya gate crash by Wolfgang Golz. Forshaw pausing to avoid a rear end. Perkins Windshield wiper storm collision. and a Saturday night hit and run on Silver Creek Hill involving Douglas Horne and Margaret Strachan.
Mrs. Pearl Kennedy hosted a dinner in Vancouver where Norman Hacking, grandson of Joseph Hacking who founded the Free Press in 1875, was among the guests. Hacking continues the family newspaper tradition by writing the column Ship to Shore in the Vancouver Province. The gathering highlighted renewed ties across Canada and longtime Acornian connections.
The Knox church CG LT hiked to The Breezes on Saturday in chilly weather. The girls swam and boated, roasted hot dogs and marshmallows, sang, and closed with a worship service led by Mrs. D Davidson. This hike ends the Canadian Girl Training activities until September.
