Officials said the Acton Rotary Club would receive support from the Ontario Society for Crippled Children to provide extensive assistance. Regular members from Guelph Georgetown and Milton Clubs gathered for a dinner at the Dominion Hotel while a birth notice from Zweibrucken Germany arrived the same day as the baby’s birth.
A two hour Acton council meeting heard RV Anderson and Associates report on Lakeview subdivision storm water drainage with recommended improvements totalling about 3300. The council directed the road committee to study the issue and inform affected homeowners about driveway tiling with culverts, cost borne by ratepayers.
Jack Henry of D3ckville named standard bearer for Halton CCF at Mill nomination in steelworkers hall. Other candidates Marjory Pinney Joan McIntosh Fred Huey and Jack Taylor conceded. Brydon praised early nomination and urged youth engagement. speakers outlined CCF policy on poverty communism health care and taxation.
Alberrt Van Gils announced plans to build a three story cement block with veneer brick front on Tiga Streets site after purchasing five business lots. The project includes eight five room apartments and ground floor shops, renovating the Holland Shop and beauty salon, replacing a block destroyed by last year fire. A prospective operator for the beauty salon was named. work to begin soon.
United Steelworkers Local 3022 voted to accept a two year agreement giving all employees a total 25 cent per hour increase. The package includes 10 cents retroactive to May 1967, 5 cents in January 1968, and 10 cents planned for August 1968, bringing hourly wages to a final rate of $1.65. Ontario Labor official R V Bradley mediated the settlement. Local leaders included Paul Wilson and Frank Winters with Charlie Pinson also involved.
The Acton Chamber of Commerce held an outing at Belwood Lake last evening with boating water skiing and surfing. Men enjoyed lunch provided by themselves. No submarine diving reported Roy Goodwin reportedly skied on the water.
The Acton Y Board reports over 150 boys and girls enrolled in Julyly August swimming classes in the park. Seven instructors are currently guiding groups and an urgent appeal seeks two more instructors. Interested persons should contact Jack Price at the Municipal Office.
Six Orange Lodges and allied bands from Halton County marched in Oakville for the 387th annual Orange Walk. The parade drew seven central Ontario counties with a wreath laid at Gore Park cenotaph. Speakers included Grand Secretary Gordon Keyes and Mayor William Anderson.
Ontario police begin issuing violation tickets with on the spot summons for traffic offences this month. The form lists charges and the court stage, includes a tear off section to register a plea, and cuts steps for officers and courts compared with the old mailing system.
De Arte Fo Bull medical officers and director of the fellow County Health Unit announced the appointment. Dr Chesley M Oake has training and experience in public health. De Bull says Hatton County is fortunate to secure his services. Oake will be dying in Oakville and will be assisting De Bull in medical work of the health unit.
Accomplished musician and longtime Knox Presbyterian church teacher Miss Laura Gray died after extended illness at General Hospital in Guelph. She lived in Acton over fifty years and taught piano for many years, remembered by former Actonians as a kind instructor. Survived by brother Cal A Gray, she was active in church and community groups. funeral held at Knox with Rev McKenge, interment in Fairview cemetery.
Near noon today Harold Mike Coxe fell from a ladder while checking the heating system at the new fire hall and was taken to Guelph General hospital in an unconscious state. He was later discharged home with a wrenching body and severe bruises. Dr J Scott said no bones were broken.
