Accidents across a farm and town left several people hospitalized this past week. J C Kranendonk was shaken when a bale fell at George Wallace’s farm and taken to Guelph General. no bones broken. Bruce Brigden suffered injuries from a pig attack and was sent for X rays at Milton Private. not serious. Ralph Tripp dislocated his right elbow after a ladder fall. L Duffield required eight stitches from a redwood splinter at Ajax Engineers. Gail Fryer broke a left leg. Debbie Jordan broke an arm at Sick Children’s hospital. Don Lindsay sprained a thumb during Legion Minor activities. Insurance covers all incidents.
A crowd gathered on a hill outside Guelph to mark the opening of a sixth well by Anthony Gas and Oil Explorations Co of Acton. Speeches by Tony Seynuck and local officials praised gas finds and future benefits while noting the well on Wo 7 Highway was set up the day before on leased land formerly known as the fox pens farm.
Mr and Mrs Wilfred Coles mark fifty years of marriage with a family gathering at Hartley Coles home Victoria Avenue Acton and plan to celebrate with relatives. They have lived in Acton since 1900s except for war years. He is veteran of South African and World War I and long time member of the Lorne Geots Regiment. They are active in church and community and their family includes Ernest and Jessie Coles, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The Hindley family reunion at Earl Hindley’s farm in Oustic gathered eight siblings all living. Ernest Hindley was absent in Vancouver B C. The youngest member is now 65 years old.
Local Chamber of Commerce officials schedule a membership outing next Wednesday. A bus will depart in the afternoon for Toronto to tour the Parade of Progress exhibit at the CNE grounds sponsored by General Motors. The display features 20th century science and mechanical wizardry and debuts in Canada this week. After dinner the group of about 40 will attend an International League baseball game at Maple.
Charles Oakes of Rockwood district narrowly escaped death when his car was struck on the right side by a truck driven by William McCann. The car, crushed to a three foot width, was total loss while the truck sustained 250 in damages. Oakes required hospital care for six fractured ribs and facial injuries at Guelph General Hospital. Joseph McCann, the truck passenger and brother of the driver, suffered a forehead gash from the impact.
Exasperated HEPC members learned the Hamilton office reduced the Acton hydro rehabilitation plan by more than half and cut the debenture request to 25 000 with 25 000 in coffered funds questioned. Mayor Tyler urged proofs and a Hamilton meeting to review the figures as street lighting costs were trimmed to eliminate deficits and a new office helper was hired.
Georgetown and Acton leaders warned of an unwieldy High School District Board as Halton’s future industrial boom looms. Mayor Armstrong urged a long view while Milton and Acton discussed school building needs and funding, with talks on subdivison rules and local governance continuing.
Funeral held for Robert F. Adsett of Rockwood area who drowned Sunday afternoon in a pond at Beaver Lodge 15 miles north of Rockwood. He swam with three friends including cousin William Adsett 20 and siblings Majory 16. authorities say a cramp may have caused the sinking. Firemen and police recovered the body after about two hours as mud hindered the search. Beside his parents, he leaves one sister Olive.
Mrs Moyse noticed a fire in a bread truck at 1 45 Tuesday afternoon and ran to Lovell's Meat Market to report it. The driver threw burning cardboard into the street and firemen put out the flames promptly.
About 50 from Acton joined 150 from Weston at the A P Green plants picnic in Erin Park. Weston engineering staff won the horse shoe trophy from Acton. prizes went to Jack Ayles and Art Ford. The day featured a treasure hunt for children, bingo, pony rides, races, swimming and novelty contests including flour doused sponge heave. John Corby emceed with Ian Standing and George Barbeau assisting. Garnet Rose and John Graham contributed musical selections.
The Y hosts a two week day camp for 53 boys with morning and afternoon sessions led by Y secretary Bob Brayshawn and Mrs. Brayshaw. Activities include movies softball tours to Ford plant, Schaeffer respiration instruction, field day events and tribal theme with four clans Apache Troquois Hurons Blackfeet.
Police report several weekend accidents in Uus district. Ronald Atkins blows out and sideswipes David Moore causing 600 dollars damage. Ronald Maison neuve loses control into Clarence Anderson’s field near Terra Cotta for 150 dollars. Doreen Austin treated for cuts after Leszsia Rego crash with 209 damage to car. Gabriel Pascal hits pothole causing 400 damage. Minor crash between Elio Poloni and David Griffin for 150 damage. Donald Perkins hits hydro pole for 200 damage. Roy Laidlaw rear ended by David Thomson for 150 damage. Library furniture planned for new and existing classrooms.
A Free Press note updates readers on Acton altitude. Officials obtained the 1150 feet figure from a new Acton folder and will include it in future pocket booklets. Clerks' office inquiries prompted the clarification.
Vandalism endangers Acton Park facilities including the junior swimming pool and Fairy Lake. Bottles and sulphur have been thrown into the pool, threatening closure during peak summer water use. Police seek citizen help to stop abuse and protect the park for public, free use.
