The 17th annual summer Scouters training season opens Monday at Blue Springs Scout Reserve with 193A Scouts Leaders class bringing leaders from Windsor Ottawa and North Bay. Rover Moot follows July 30 to August 1 with 250 rovers expected and several training courses thereafter.
Sixty five children attended the first parish Vacation School held in St Josephs Hall from July 14 to 16 with full attendance. An exhibit of the marks made by attendees will be shown Saturday July 18 from 2 30 to 4 00 pm.
William Moore alias Cruce Marshall who escaped from Halton County jail Milton six weeks ago was arrested near Ottawa. Police say he faces robbery with violence charges in Carleton County and will be held pending trial. He has prior fraud and theft convictions and was recently sentenced to three years in Kingston penitentiary.
Ray C. Day of Rockwood, youngest son of Ab and Mrs Frank Day, earns a $200 War Memorial scholarship from the University of Toronto Alumni Federation. He is in his second year of Mechanical Engineering.
Anawera were scarce last week. Mrs. J A Locker of Acton wins the weekly poem puzzle with the answer Dime Novel. Hot weather blamed for fewer solutions. readers invited to file answers at Tin Free Press Office before Monday evening.
Georgetown hosts Twelfth procession with Glen Williams Orangemen experiencing misfortune due to disorganization. Only thirteen lodges participated as Mayor Gibbons and chairman Lloyd Dingle attended. Prizes went to several lodges including Stewartown and Guelph groups. notable participants included Joseph Marchment and William Gilman of Glen Williams, two of the town’s oldest Orangemen.
The Acton Band presented another splendid Sunday evening concert in the Park last week. The varied program included sacred selections and the Waterloo contest teat piece Champion overture, well rendered under Bandmaster A. H. Perrott.
Two serious Saturday accidents west of Acton and Rockwood left one man dead and several injured. A 10 DeSoto driven by Stewart Lockhart and a companion burned after a blowout caused a ditch rollover near Acton. Lockhart suffered a deep arm cut and both escaped serious injury. A second crash near Rockwood killed Wilson, 38, of Kitchener, and injured four others including Miss Margaret Musselman and Otto Dannecker. Wilson died at hospital from a fractured skull. the drivers of the other car, Ernest Hall and Robert Merriam, survived with minor injuries. The Wilson car, connected to Forsyth Park outing, rolled after impact. The inquest is set for July 2.
Mrs George Hynds of Poronta, a reader for sixty-one years of Tae Fane Press, is described as the paper's oldest subcriber by years. She eagerly anticipates each weekly visit and values news from Acton where she spent many years.
Group 4 of the Duke of Devonshire Chapter held a successful tea at Hill Hall with Mrs Blow and Mrs Peter Smith hosting. Prizes were awarded in bridge and the bean contest won by Mrs R. M. MacDonald, with mentions of musical numbers and farewell silver tray presented to Mrs Muokake upon her move to Unbridge.
Helen McEachern and Frank Thompson, pupils of Woodside School, were recommended on their year's work and granted Entrance standings.
Last Thursday evening the pupils of Mrs. L A Wonlen AT CM presented a piano recital at York House the home of Mrs. Alex Mann A varied program pleased mothers and friends and refreshments followed afterward
The Public Utilities Commission met Wednesday with Commissioner Hansen and Chairman Kerr in attendance. Accounts were ordered paid including Hydro Department HEPC of Ontario supplies 21.05 and convention expenses 34.05. Waterworks power costs 34.85, and several line materials and repairs were approved. Superintendent Wilbon to prepare water works specifications for painting and repairs for the next meeting. Chairman Kerr reported on the Hydra Convention at Muskoka.
Acton falls to Milton and Hespeler in week action as Milton dominates with steady hitting and early leads. Acton, led by Cripps and Mooney, battled back in spots but could not overcome Milton’s offense and strong bullpen.
Eramosa Township council met at Town Hall Tockwood on July 11 with Heeve Storey and councilors Gray Lash Pinkney and Kelly present. They agreed to fund immunization against diphtheria with the Womens Institute and considered grants to Acton Fall Pur and Erin Pall Full. The Rockwood Village Trusteen sought to close part of Church Street for a fire hall site 220 by 40 feet and to close unused roads near Highway 7. Lawful rights to water and dam operation on the fourth line were discussed seeking relief and river level maintenance. Tax roll issues and 1938 bills were reviewed with a motion about placing the County Rate on current tax bills. the motion failed.
Coming events include a special Scout Meeting Monday July 18 at 7 30 pm in Y M C A Acton Scouts urged to attend. Acon Park hosts a Monster Band Tattoo Saturday July 23 with a big street parade fireworks and the Acton Citizens Band. Alban’s Lawn Social and Amateur Show July 20 on church grounds features a good program doors prizes booths and novelties admission 25 children 10 cents.
