Twilight Tour Highlights Long Term Pasture and Farm Practices

More than 100 members attended the Halton Soil and Crop Twilight Tour visiting Ken Ella's Hornby farm and Fred Nurse's Ashgrove farm. At Ella's, a five acre pasture laid in 1955 yielded about three tons per acre after partial hay cutting. Nurse's farm showcased wheat, spring grain, corn and hay, plus a 200 ton grass silage pit, a work shop and labor-saving barn equipment. Dr H L Patterson of Ontario Agriculture spoke on farm business adjustments due to bulk tanks and dairy herd improvements, praising dairy cattle profitability and farm management insights. The program concluded with refreshments and 4 H club help.
