Storm Lashes District Power Grid and Roads
A Sunday evening storm swept the district with sheets of rain and high winds. In Acton a primary power line on Church St snapped leaving the east town without hydro for up to five and a half hours while hydro crews repaired the damage. Lightning hit the town hall transformer knocking out the fire siren and lighting, later repaired. Trees blocked roads and orchards suffered losses, and a family narrowly escaped when two trees toppled onto a car at Erin Park. No injuries were reported.

Fairy Lake Drowning Jury Recommends Bridge Inspectio
A coroner's jury in Milton ruled the death of eight year old Dorothy Snider at the Breezes on Fairy Lake accidental by drowning after a pontoon bridge tipped during a Toronto church picnic. The verdict urged annual safety inspections of floating bridges by a qualified engineer and noted the 126 foot structure rested on 22 barrels and steel cables. Roy Smith the county engineer called the bridge sound but supported limits on crowd size.

Minor Mill St collision causes moderate damage
Police investigated a Mill St accident Tuesday just after noon. Pietro Morandi of Mimico struck the rear of George Hargrave of Acton who was parked. Hargrave car sustained about 75 dollars damage while Morandi’s car suffered about 175 dollars in damage.

A week long Vacation Bible School opens Monday July 9 at three churches for children with or without Sunday School affiliation. Activities run 9 to 11 30 am daily July 9 to July 18 with groups for pre school kindergarten primary and junior levels led by a team of church volunteers. Town Paving Plan Approved by Municipal Board
The Ontario Municipal Board approved Acton's street paving project in a 15 minute hearing with no objectors. The $100,000 program, largely funded by the town after verbal high road approval for 58 percent, will use two and a half inch hot mix asphalt on all local streets except Glenlea and Lakeview subdivisons.

Acton Runner First in Blue Water Marathon at Wiarton
Bruce Andrews won the mile and a half midget race at the ninth annual Blue Water marathon in Wiarton on Dominion Day finishing in eight minutes and five seconds to claim a fishing rod. Members of the Guelph Legion track club competed against top Canadian runners.

Night Burglars Hack Past Wall At Ballentine’s Service Station
A burglary at Ballentine’s service station on No 7 Highway occurred during the weekend. Intruders hacked a cement block wall, entered the garage, and stole about 330 plus 10 cartons of cigarettes. The thieves tried to conceal the break and left after breaking the front door lock. Constable George Moore investigated.
