Regional plan to merge Peel Halton into large regional government

McKeough outlined a tentative regional system absorbing Burlington through Erin and parts of Wellington, grouping six or seven area municipalities under lower-tier councils. Acton faced mixed reactions as Nassagaweya and rural townships cried disenfranchisement while officials feared loss of local control. The plan aims for six or seven units with Burlington possibly joining, targeting January 1971 as implementation.

Residents oppose Cobblehill housing site proposal

Cobblehill Road residents led by Trevor Forbes petitioned the town council with 47 of 55 contacted opposing the Ontario Housing Corporation plan for geared to income and senior housing on Cobblehill Road. They cited steep hills, poor access, traffic, and proximity to schools and waterways as reasons against a single family area. Mayor Les Duby acknowledged ongoing location issues.

Regional council seat counts by new Ontario municipalities outlined

The plan by Municipal Affairs Minister Darcy McKeough defines seven areas with populations from 18 000 to 136 000 and regional representation from one to seven members. Area 1 includes Port Credit and Strestwilla with 136 000 people. Area 2 covers Brampton and Toronto Gore with 68 000. Area 3 spans Albian Caledon and Orangeville with 18 000. Area 4 Georgetown Acton and Etqueting with 24 000. Area 6 Milton and Oakville north of Base Lina Road with 127 600. the Oakville main part with 64 000. Area 7 Quuslington if included with four regional representatives. The new region would total about 400 000 and the regional council would have 21 members, roughly one per 20 000 residents.

Train car collision at Mill Street crossing

Donald Ford of Crescent Street was blinded by the sun when his car was struck by a southbound five car train at the Mill Street C N R crossing. The car suffered 1200 damage, Ford escaped with minor injuries. Train damage was 25 to engine steps. Ford’s car towed to John’s Texaco. Cons Kressler laid a charge. A previous car was hit there in November and an Acton woman was killed by a train last year.

John Goy Graduates at University of Guelph Convocation

John Goy Jr son of Mr and Mrs John Goy earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Guelph winter convocation held last Friday afternoon. Chancellor George Drew presided as 125 graduates received B Sc degrees, many in Arts. After the ceremony friends and relatives joined a reception.

Pedestrian Hit By Car At Mill Main

Mrs Maude Chisholm was struck by a car at Mill Main and taken to Guelph General Hospital with a broken wrist and bruised leg. The 6 20 p m accident remained under investigation by Const Roy Wood who seeks witnesses to contact police.
