Free Press reporter Barb McIntosh failed to find groundhogs on a sunny Sunday and looked for other signs of six-week weather. She spotted Humpty Dumpty the bear emerging briefly from his den near the school creek before retreating again, filmed for the record.
Nassagaweya council denounces regional merger plans as a tool of negotiation. Reeve Hoey notes a tentative department plan would split the township along a nonexistent road, prompting calls for alternatives. Deputy Reeve MacArthur insists Nassagaweya remain a unit with representation, warning of loss of minority voice under rep-by-pop.
The Acton office begins a 24 hour lock box trial seven days a week to assess public convenience. If unsuccessful, normal hours resume. Rates for lock boxes doubles with small boxes at 4 dollars and large boxes at 10 dollars. Rent due February 1 felt the rise first for some users.
In the reporting week ending February 1 1969 OPP noted 13 liquor offences, two property damage accidents with 1300 damages, one personal injury crash, thirteen Provincial Court convictions with 264 in fines. Police urged parents to keep children off Fairy Lake due to thin ice and dredging depths up to 20 feet.
Several Acton and district residents were involved in a rash of accidents on area roads investigated by Milton OPP. None were seriously injured. Berony Kuiken and Margaret Riley had a minor collision on Highway 7 east of Sideroad 20 with $1,750 damage. William Bickell and Dan S. Johnson collided on Highway 25 south of Sideroad 25 causing $1,300 damage. Earl H. Near and Brenda J. Denny were involved in a Third Line collision near Acton town limits with $550 damage.
Acton police logged three thefts on Thursday. A C N R station window was broken at 6 45 am by an early morning train. A railway investigator blamed children for stolen items. The United Church minister’s study was broken into at noon with $20 missing. A black leather purse containing papers and money was stolen from Bill Stuckey’s car parked by Acton Home Furnishings. Mrs Crawford Vollett of Guelph owned the purse. Meer Vollett and Mr Stuckey were at a funeral.
Bad weather pushes completion for the M Z Bennett addition delaying planned February end date. The Acton continuing committee discusses on site changes, water main, lighting, and wall construction while budget talks proceed for the Halton county board of education. A county financial surplus is reported and a local youth injures a restaurant window in the weekend incident.
Susan Shoemaker topped five other orators in Acton’s school speaking finals held Wednesday. The grade seven Robert Little student delivered a two second over minimum five minute speech on skiing though she does not ski. Mayor Les Duby awarded the Hydro Trophy, and she also claimed the Rachlin Trophy for her school.
