Oakville Hosts County Board of Education Headquarters Move

Oakville to house county board administration with Trafalgar Road focal point and branches in Burlington Milton and Georgetown area. North Halton to use portable classroom at Hanison public school. Board plans a long range admin plan by June 1970. Some trustees fear north-end impact and vote to maintain advisor committees until June. Residents urged to call Oakville education centre collect in January.

Council approves Cobblehill Road low rental housing project

Acton council approved a proposal by Ontario Housing Corp to erect 12 family housing units and 12 senior citizen units on Cobblehill Road. The 24 acre site near Cobblehill Road will require rezoning before construction. Headway Construction will build at $15,967 per family unit and $10,025 per senior unit.

McKeough calls regional meeting on Peel Halton area

Minister of Municipal Affairs invites councils from Halton Peel and neighboring districts to a January 22 Queen’s Park meeting. The aim is to discuss tentative proposals for reorganizing local government in the Peel Halton region and to pursue regional government negotiations.

Currie Reeve George Currie of Esquesing was returned to the Halton County Warden post on the second ballot after a three candidate race. He defeated Reeve Alan Day of Oakville and Reeve Austen Ledwith of Milton, marking the first repeated full-term election since 1930. Two new county council members were welcomed, Deputy-Reeve Mrs. Anna MacArthur and Deputy-Reeve Ted Tyler Jr., as the inaugural ceremony concluded with oath of office.

Halton Crazg Board approves educator salaries in closed session

The Halton Crazg Board of Education settled wages in a 45 minute closed door session. James W. Singleton will earn 31500 annually as education director, a 4000 raise from his prior Burlington post. Douglas Lawless gains 4000 to 29000. Three area superintendents receive 25500, Bruce T. Lindley 24000, and assistants 18500 to 17500. Several Oakville and Burlington appointees join as assistant superintendents and staff positions. Only 11 of 13 proposed assistants approved as amendment failed.

Fire destroys 20000 day old turkeys at Acton farm

A Sunday morning fire gutted a 375 foot steel turkey barn on the Liebovici farm near Acton, killing about 20,000 day old birds. Owner Sam Liebovici valued losses near 100000. Firefighters battled flames for hours, salvaging part of the area as wind prevented further spread. Cause unknown though a propane gas leak is suspected. The couple arrived from Toronto as the barn burned.

Halton trustees approve 250 monthly honorarium and travel allowance

Halton County Board of Education trustees voted themselves the maximum 250 dollars per month plus a 0.10 dollar per mile travel allowance at Milton. With enrolment of 44,674, the act sets 250 dollars monthly. two Burlington representatives receive 150 dollars monthly for secondary school purposes. The chairman gets a bonus up to one third of the amount.

Theft at Station Hotel car yields radios and shovel

Friday theft reported from a car parked at the Station Hotel involved a broken window and items including two radios a shovel and battery cables valued around 50 dollars no vegematic machine. A separate accident on Mill W near the laundromat occurred in falling snow when Frank Holmes hit by backing vehicle driven by Yvon Emond. Holmes sustained about 75 dollars in damage to the right rear door.
