The Acton arena opened for skating this winter on Saturday. In the morning boys and girls were admitted free while in the evening the usual admission charge applied. Officials hope weather cooperates to keep skating going.
A major blaze at the corner of Mall and Elgin destroyed three apartments and three businesses with estimated damages around 33000. Bert Wood, an insurance agent, lost his office but continues operations in the same building. Local residents and businesses adapt, and Legion Ladies Auxiliary plans a bingo to aid affected families.
A federal grant tax policy announced in Parliament Tuesday could yield 987 for Acton’s treasury. The Post Office, Acton’s only federally owned building, valued at 16 450, was taxed at 987 under the new rule. previously taxes applied only when federal building assessment exceeded two percent of town total.
The newly formed Y's Menettes group met at Ruth Leatherland's home and sewed for the International convention. They tote portable sewing machines needles thread and accessories and make maple leaf pot holders for the July event at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The group plans a traveling baking basket for all members and wives and shared a lunch after a brief meeting.
Acton Badminton Club beat Guelph Garrison 7 to 6 at the Acton YMCA on Wednesday night. Acton took three of five doubles in play with men’s doubles 3-1 in Acton’s favor while Guelph won the ladies’ doubles. Players included Joyce Carpenter Roy Gatensey Garnett Myler Marjorie Gatenley Liz Nolan G Williams Maurice Jeffrey June Braythaw Doug Dainteth and Maurice Van Hemmer.
At the Rotary club meeting held in the Dominion Hotel Tuesday plans for spring fundraising were discussed. Attendees included George Thompson of Orange and Lloyd Minshall of Oakville, with three new teachers named at the public school, Wikdala from Georgetown teaching grade six, Mrs Barber from George town teaching grade five, and Mrs Whiting moving to Acton to teach grade.
The public school is renamed the Robert Little school in Fairview, honoring a former Halton County inspector. A reunion tribute stands at the site. New M Z Bennett School appoints E Smith as principal and Wood Smith as caretaker.
The Acton Chamber of Commerce heard from GJ Beach, Workmen's Compensation Board liaison, on compulsory coverage for retailers. Frank Terry presided at the YMCA with about 28 attendees as Beach detailed 30 years of board experience and the program's history since 1953. The board, staffing 1000 across five offices, oversees industry rates and claims, with 1985 figures showing 1203 retailers under the Act and 3300 claims since. A March 4 session with speaker George W Allan was planned to promote cooperation and broader Acton industry benefits.
The Acton Citizens Band released its executive meeting results listing committee members and chairmen. Key figures include Charles Kingsmill Elmer Smith Zajac Charles Mason with roles in membership and publicity and Alf Perrott reappointed as bandmaster for the year.
YMCA hosts new square dance club with plans for lessons and social nights. Organizers expect strong turnout with prominent guest dancers and friendly competition for beginners and adults.

Nominations debated at the Lakeside chapter meeting held at the Legion Hall Tuesday. Prize winners at bingo included Helmer Peckett Mary Matthews Helen Jacque Edith Watkins Jessie Coles Charlotte Holmes and Helen Landsborough.
Workers continue steady progress on the under construction Bank of Mont real, with substantial structure nearly covered by canvas as the modern building nears completion.
Halton's junior farm representatives competed at the provincial conference in Toronto on Saturday. Mia Waldon of Brin township and Bertha Watton of Acton were among five finalists from 24 counties in public speaking and demonstrations.
A euchre tournament was held at a school in Wanoeck on December 29. Christina Lathes won first prize, and Clare Wil son, Joseph Memael, and Mra Ut Withinsen were among top finishers. Garfield Brown, 35, former clerk treasurer of Stouffville, started as deputy clerk treasurer of Halton County, assisting Clerk William Deans at Milton Court House.
Gifts and donations of clothing food books and games supported the Children's Aid Society of Halton during Christmas. Superintendent GF Thorngian praised the broad support that helped make the holiday brighter for needy families across the county. Mr Thompson extended thanks to benefactors and organizations for making the effort possible.
After a Christmas and New Year pause, night school sessions begin again this week at the high school with classes scheduled Monday and Tuesday evenings and full enrollment reported.
North Halton Urban Board members from Acton Milton Georgetown Esquesing and Nassagaweya debated continuing private ambulance services amid losses. Proposals include a 10000 subsidy to Brampton operators or towns buying ambulances with volunteer drivers. A special joint meeting of the five municipalities was planned to decide the path forward.

In his apartment above the post office Cam Leahman heard his name called during Appreciation Day. He raced downstairs within two minutes to claim his $104 prize with a 40 percent coupon. First name called was Mrs S Brunelle-aloa with a 40 percent coupon. W G Gamble won the regular $5 award. Jackpot reduced to $200 for next draw.
