Acton Native Brigadier Rae Named in Imperial Honors List

The Canadian Army New Year honors include Brigadier Cecil Alexander Rae of Acton named Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Rae served in World War I and World War II, held key medical posts, and later worked with pensions and veteran health programs in Canada. He is listed with his wife Marion Wilson Bar and two sons John and Alan, of Toronto.

Son of local man heard from in Japanese Prisoner of War

Acton friends learn that Mr ROW Lowe has received word about his son, Mr Stewart Lowrie, a prisoner of war in Japan. The message was undated but stated he is well, the only word received in the past year.

Blizzard Closes Roads Grips Southwest Ontario

A severe blizzard left highways blocked and side roads unmapped across southwestern Ontario. Travel stalled by all means as snow drifts rose and visibility dropped, with routes between Acton and Milton reopening only late Tuesday. Snow fences were not yet erected and crews work to clear drifts throughout the region.

Globe Hotel at Erin Destroyed by Fire

Fire of undetermined origin swept the Globe Hotel in Erin early Wednesday, leaving a ruined shell and thousands of dollars in losses. Six residents escaped in nightclothes, one helper injured, and ties to pioneer Erin honor the old structure now burned to the ground.

Barn meeting of Holstein breeders held at Graymar

A Talton Holstein Breeders Club gathering on December 27 at Graymar Farm Oakville featured a demonstration of the Selective Registration system for classifying cattle by conformation. Wounded Canadian Soldier Allan Gordon Reported Wounded

A wife in Acton learns her husband Pte Allan Gordon was wounded while serving with the Canadians near Italy after Christmas. The Gordon family also mourns the loss of another son Pte Wilton Gordon killed in Italy. Allen Gordon had joined the ParE Scots then Calgary Highlanders, overseas since 1943.

Mr F. Watson of Ernfuld Saskatchewan returns to his home province after a 60 year absence from Ontario. He visited relatives and friends this week and noted changes in Teardmore Co plant and Manitoba Saskatchewan development since he left in 1844. Acton Mourns as Gunner George Lovethurst Dies in Belgium

Gunner George Albert Lovethurst, known as Bert Smethurst, is reported killed in action in Belgium. Born in Scotland, he moved to Acton as a child and served two and a half years in Canada and overseas two years with the Canadians in the Belgian Rhine region. He leaves a wife Hetty Withers and three children, plus his parents Mr. and Mrs. Smethhurst and two sisters, all mourning in Acton.

William Loree Burned By Gasoline In Car Start

William Loree aged 40 of Rockwood was hospitalized with burns after gasoline exploded while he and his brother worked on a car. Water in the fuel caused trouble. they drained the tank and fresh gasoline was added. A backfire ignited the old gasoline. Loree was the sole casualty and is expected to recover at home within days.

Soldier Home for Christmas From Acton

Gunner James Alpxander Iigging returned to Acton on December 7 after service overseas with an artillery unit in World War I. He arrived aboard the Lady Nelson and was met by his wife and family in Toronto for a month's leave before resuming duties in Toronto. His wounds from Belgians October her are progressing satisfactorily and he hopes to recover fully. He joined from Hamilton and had been with the reserve before enlisting.

Election Rebuks Monday s Voting In Two Townships

Trafalgar Township held elections for Councillors and Trustees. Reeve W Onniber t was elected by acclamation, Deputy Reeve W H Sigegar also by acclamation, with Sargeant 450, Hall 424, Ford 401, Devlin - Not elected. School trustees saw Percy Merry leading with 360, Milton McCleary 348, James Marstall 361, Orr 367, Pope 217, Gibbs 201. Esquesing Township turnout was light due to bad roads. May led the poll with 457 votes, Currie 490, Brown 249, Trownridge 195. Murray and Cleaves elected Reeve and Deputy-Reeve by acclamation.

Snow plow and tractor collide on Main Street

A snow plow driven by Harry Oakley and a tractor operated by Gordon Leslie collided on Malin Street north of Acton while clearing snow. The tractor suffered minor damage, the plow blade bent, and work was delayed a day while repairs and investigation by Trade Officer Ray Maton were conducted.
