A new Legion post was organized at a Veterans meeting held last Saturday afternoon in Acton Town Hall. Charter members were welcomed and, after a brief ceremony, plans were set for ongoing activities and community service.
A Saturday meeting in the Acton Town Hall led to forming a local Canadian Legion Post for ex service men. Comrade Padbury chaired, outlining duties to veterans, widows and orphans. Officers elected include President W. J. Gould and Secretary-Treasurer Y. L. Wright. Poppy Fund funds to be used for veterans without deductions. Applications for Chapter Membership opened. a banquet will follow.
The monthly Women's Institute gathering will be held at Mrs. Wm Evans home on March 5 at p.m. Notices advise readers to report missing free press copies and address label misrouting. In Guelph court a motorist was fined for reckless driving after splashing a pedestrian. the judge called it careless disregard for others. Other items include Acton branch fundraising for a cemetery entrance, Jolly Dozen entertainments, and a lengthy report of a liquor party arrest in Elora with multiple city hops and a large beer seizure at Norval.
In a dramatic Monday night clash at the Local Arena Acton loses 2-1 to Stratford in a key O H L A race game. Townsley struck for Stratford, Acton fought back with grit despite missed chances and strong Stratford defense led by Gingras, Holloway faced heavy shots, and the crowd of over 1,700 witnessed a tense, high quality battle as Stratford widened its edge in the series.
Women from town churches gathered at Hapilst Church on Frisiday afternoon for National Women's Day of Prayer with Mrs. CRev. W.O. Hhmiltan in charge and many congregation ladies participating. Hockey plans feature Acton vs Georgetown for the Peter A. Smith trophy at Acton Arena Friday, as Acton aims to reclaim the trophy and Georgetown supports a strong defense. Mr. W. Hawes of Georgetown celebrated his eighty eighth birthday, a longtime Acton resident who helped develop Moorecroft gardens and supported local Conservative causes. The United Farmers Clubs met with the U. S. Y. P.O. joining for a February program at Parish Hall, highlighted by Maple Leaf instrumental, Farmers’ Convention reports, and a frosty social. A quiet Valentine wedding occurred at St Alban’s Church as Annie Evelyne Tubman married Robert Fletcher, with reception at the bride’s home then travel to Toronto. gifts included a generous cheque and keepsakes.
A driver named Harold Batley of Georgetown escaped injury when his car was struck by a C.N.R. train at Acton’s Main Street crossing yesterday afternoon. The rear end of the car was badly wrecked. the train stopped quickly and investigators reviewed the collision. The accident note was accepted as the driver assumed responsibility.
Local audience will attend Knox Young People's Guild production Phang It for Father in Town Trail the week of the 123th. The play is a lively farce filled with amusing situations. Also reported: Brampton child Billy Gigham narrowly escaped a street accident when a car nearly struck him. driver Norman McLean avoided impact and the child sustained only a bruise on the left foot. A Cheltenham fire completely destroyed a frame building occupied by Robert Howle son, with Mrs Howleson and two boys at home. cause believed to be an overheated stove pipe. The following morning hotel owner Mr Chiusamore offered furnished quarters for the family at no rent. The house loss is $1,000. furniture $400, insured. New Presbyterian minister at Georgetown was welcomed by a large congregation and visiting pastors. Rev Dr A W H Neward inducted. A cheque from the congregation honored Rev McFall’s services. The Georgetown church choir performed two anthems.
The funeral of Willam McKay of Aberfoyle was held at Das Church and Crown Cemetery, led by ev. C. Mathieson. Surviving family includes a widow and nine children. The Hamiota obituary for David James Hill recalls his Rockwood roots, homesteading in the Bloris district, rural council service, and four sons and four daughters.
Trustees Mc Donald Sawyer Norton present as Jana Navill presided. The finance committee recommended paying several accounts totaling around 26.30, including Norton Motors supplies and Acton Public Utilities Commission. It was decided to defer plane instruction until September term start pending fuller consideration. A meeting with the Council and Board of Health to discuss a County Medical Unit was proposed. Coal supply for the school was on hand and to be delivered in due course.
Two elderly ladies at a band concert in Hyde Park, London debate the piece being played. One asserts William Tell while the other claims Poet and Peasant, until a passerby corrects them by showing a programme board.
