A mid day blaze at Smith and Stone a Georgetown clay products and electrical fixtures plant in College View caused an estimated 30 000 to 40 000 in losses. About 125 workers were on site with only some remaining. fire spread from the assembling room to other departments before the watermain break halted the blaze. Fire brigade aided by factory equipment contained the flames and the kilns survived. rebuilding of the bullpen is expected and insurance covered the damages.
The death occurred in Toronto on Monday of Mrs Isobel Gilchrist wife of Archibald Gilchrist a noted florist and welfare worker. Born in Nossagayewa township to Scottish settlers she married in 1870 and lived in Guelph before moving to Toronto in 1888. She led Victoria Presbyterian Church work founded women’s church groups and the Women’s Institute in York County while lecturing on botany for the province. Survived by her husband and several relatives, the funeral was held Wednesday.
The Women’s Institute of Palermo organized an energetic effort to electrify village streets. They circulated a funding pledge among residents and secured cash to install lamps and cover annual current costs. The aim is to brighten the village and improve appearance for residents and visitors.
A new direct long distance telephone service between Acton and Guelph begins March 3. A resident dials the local number to reach the other city, paying fifteen cents for a three minute call. The system connects via an operator for both person to person and home or business calls.
Local residents and visitors from Toronto Bracebridge and Ottawa spent weekends and week-ends in town. Several people were seen at church events and social gatherings with families and guests visiting relatives here and in Lindsay Guelph and Hull. Mrs Baugh was in Toronto with relatives while Mrs Kennedy and the Daughters of the Empire held meetings in Mitchell. Stephen Guest left the Bank of Montreal for a travelling auditor role with the Canadian Oil Company.
The Acton Ladies Baseball Club presented its annual revue to a crowded hall showing strong local talent. Performers received enthusiastic applause for numbers like Canada and Why did I kiss that Girl with a supporting cast of Miss Galraith Miss Mason Ray Agnew Rudolph Boellvogel and others plus Edna Johnston on piano and Lottie Mason on ukulele. The event, praised by Rev J Culp for patronage and artistry, marked one of the year's most popular entertainments.
A Toronto Star interview drew Halton and Peel leaders voicing strong opposition to the Ontario Temperance Act amendment. Major Chisholm and W. S. Savage condemned Premier Ferguson and Nickle for breaking pledges, predicting party splits and temperance workers switching sides. Other conservatives including J. Flumerfelt and a Milton dealer echoed disapproval, stressing adherence to the act.

The Acton High School Literary Society held a lively meeting last Friday featuring a piano donation thanks to the Trustees. A chorus, solo numbers, and readings drew cheers, with Mr. H. P. Moore acting as critic and Marjorie Switzer and Gladya Scarrow delivering performances.
Acton events include an extension lecture at Town Hall on Thursday at 8 PM by the Literary Society of Acton and High Schools, a rummage sale quilting bee at the Methodist Church, and plans for a Conservative gathering in Guelph with cabinet ministers among speakers.
In Toronto and surrounding county courts, multiple defendants faced fines for liquor and related offenses. Melvin Gordon of Niagara Township paid 1600 dollars for contraband liquor seized for export. Antonio Cardio of Guelph received three months in Wentworth County jail plus a 200-dollar fine and costs for selling liquor, with an additional 100-dollar fine for possessing a still. Russell McClure, Georgetown, detained for a week after changing lawyers. other cases included 3900 dollars in fines across Kitchener Police Court. A Studebaker car containing about 260 gallons of alcohol was seized east of Burlington. Tony Barbro and Nick Petro appeared on charges of transporting liquor while under section 70, case remanded to March 2 with cash bail.
A 1925 missive from Acton Ontario forwarded to Rivers Manitoba requests continued mailing of the paper. It mentions a two dollar payment and asks that the paper be sent to Rivers Man for another Monday after publication. It closes with best wishes for continued success.
