Acton falls 13 to 7 at home to Orangeville Dufferins in a key hockey match. Despite late pressure, Acton cannot overturn the visitors' seven first period goals as Orangeville clinches a critical win and Acton’s playoff chances fade.
Baxter Labs toppled Bannockburn 5-2 in a rough game highlighted by Sam Snyder and Ab Robinson scoring together with Bill Field. Johnny Rocher and crowd-acknowledged saves by Rocher kept Bannockburn from a larger score as Pee Wee Masters faced heavy shots in a chaotic match.
Four crews operate sewer project with Crescent finishing this week and Elgin Street to Church Street next. Agnes Street from Elgin to Frederick, Main Street 50 feet remaining, then Vimy Street. Church Street progress between Willow and John Streets. weather and soil conditions may affect schedule.
The Rev Clifford McLaughlan officiated the marriage of Doris Nene Roberts and Edward Morgan Crewson at Dundas Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon. The bride wore white satin with a sweetheart neckline and long veil. bridesmaid wore yellow nylon. Groom attendants included Me bourne Tlow Uahers and Frederick Crewnon. Music by Mrs Jo Ledwith and Miss Lillian Sims sang. A reception followed at the bride’s home in West Flamboro with both families hosting. Out of town guests came from Hillaburgh Georgetown Milton Shelbourne Erin Parkill Acton Stratfordville.
The Devonshire T O D F annual meeting met at Mrs A Dill's home with Mrs W Wolfe presiding. A past regent letter was read, donations sent to Halton Music Festival and St. John Ambulance. New members named Mrs Bruce Smith and Mrs K Thorsinson. Jubilee Service planned for Knox Presbyterian Church February 12 at 7 p.m. Posts filled across officers and committees. Refreshments served by hostesses.
Acton Council met as Mayor Mason presided and discussed plans for an Old Boys reunion to celebrate Acton's town status. Officials approved sewer and road projects, added street lighting, and agreed to install a wig wag at Mill Street crossing. A driving issue was sewer connections, with laterals required every 30 feet in front of vacant lots and a probe of tax basis for wartime housing subdivisions.
The Eramosa Township School Board met in special session. Twelve applications for No 10 school teacher were reviewed and Russell McHride of Guelph was hired at 1800 dollars. Plans for No 2 school were rejected by the Department of Education. The board plans to visit new Galt district schools for suitable designs and to borrow up to 12000 from the Royal Bank of Canada. The 1050 budget was amended to defer the cost of a new school via debentures, with a trustee’s rate set and requisition to Township Council advised.
The Business Men's volley team stayed atop the Town League after strong showings. They opened with 15 0 and 15 9 wins over Micro Plastic, then dropped 15 10 in a tight final. Independents beat Tannery Reds 17 18 and 15 11 but lost the first 18 15. Tannery Blues beat Ys Men in the first game by default, the Ysa Men won the second 15 1 but Blues rallied to win 15 11 in the final.
Avery encouraging General Secretary's report and an interesting business session featured the Y.M.C.A. directors monthly meeting last Monday. Attendance figures for January show a substantial increase despite better weather for hockey and skating. Extra basketball and tumbling activities noted. An average of 28 persons join swimming parties to Guelph every second week. The Town Volleyball League remains well established with a high standard of fun and fellowship. Visits to other Ya for sport and fellowship increased with more planned. The Badminton Club conducts regular home and home series with other clubs. Regular social evenings are held by Junior Teen Agers. The Penguin Club has arranged a popular Hoe Down for Friday with outside clubs invited. A Father and Son Banquet will be a new annual feature, March 2, sponsored by the Men's Club. Three new classes are to start in February for ages 8 to 16 and a Junior Leaders Club. Planning for a large Gym Demonstration in May. The autumn beaver has long been considered a delicacy since North American settlement.
Acton juveniles were eliminated after New llambury defeated them 7 5 last week. The Midgets finished second in their group and face Flora in a sudden death game tomorrow night at 8 00 pm. The winner advances to Elmira for a Saturday February 11 showdown. Bantams sit in third place and meet Elora tomorrow night with the Elmira winner awaiting Saturday.
Acton Juniors crushed Hedmen 144 in Aurora with Simmone scoring three and Rossel adding two as a fight erupted ending with a constable intervención. Acton meets Georgetown next, aiming for a second win while Brampton Aurora and Oakville vie for Junior C playoff spots.
The Halton Co operative Medical Services held its annual meeting at Milton Court House. Vice president Milton J Brown led in the absence of the president and treasurer R R Heatherington outlined a solid year despite higher claims and hospital rates. Members approved new by laws and elected officers for 1980.
At the February 1 meeting Principal McKenzie reported Mr Shuce approved a Hotary System for Grades 5 to 7 starting September 1968. The board discussed 10000 library book usage in 1948, a $1000 architect engagement, safety patrols, and a $2500 donation to Halton Music Festival.
Friends in No 2 School Section gave a miscellaneous shower for Gerald McLeod and his wife on Friday evening. Viola Service read wishes, Howard Frank and Elwyn Service presented gifts. The couple thanked guests. lunch followed with dancing to Mitchell Bros and Red Newman's Orchestra.
