Acton secured 19 of 20 points to finish 6-1 in a decisive win. Georgetown fought hard but fell short as Acton dominated throughout the game.
Acton tops Georgetown 6 to 1 in Friday night junior hockey after a prior 6 1 win in Georgetown. Acton dominated the game with goals from Morton, Marzo, Gibbons, Windsly and others, while Georgetown pressed but could not find the net as Richardson and Greer exchanged stops.
The arena unveils a permanently installed sound system by local builder Jack Smith. The two horn setup can use one or both units with ample volume. Installation funded by the arena fund means no extra charge on skating nights and it aims to boost arena popularity along with band performances at games.
Georgetown and Acton played a penalty light game with three infractions and a clean first period. Acton scored 53 goals across ten games while Guelph struggled as Oakville defeated the Royal City squad.
The School Room trustees pledges allegiance to King Edward VII. Dr. A J Buehanan P W Pearen E McCleary and H f G Fraser attended with Chairman J M McDonald presiding. Victor Bristow the truant was suspended indefinitely but may return if the Principal approves. Repairs for a book group and stationery for the Principal were ordered. Transportation for the orchestra practice in Guelph and a Toronto Easter appearance were discussed under Trustee Prater. Physical training at the MCA gymnasium was left for later pending Inspector visit. A public school break in Sunday night was reported to the Chief of Police for investigation. Accounts totaling 276 10 from Ned Jacket Coal Co Highway Garage Moyer School Supplies National Stationers and The Geo M Hendry Co were approved. Miss W McMidan was granted Thursday afternoon absence for a funeral.
A fierce fire last night demolished the Kennedy Block on Main Street Acton with a bitter eight below zero wind. Firefighters battled six hours in freezing conditions preventing spread to adjacent buildings while water froze in the spray. The burning structure housed barber shop and plumbing shop with several tenants and long-standing businesses, water damage heavy though crews kept all safe.
On Saturday evening in Acton Victoria Avenue, Fred Alexander assaulted his sister and threatened family members. Chief McPherson encountered him at the stairs with an axe and was menaced. Constable Oliver arrested the man who remained asleep until questioned. Alexander admitted he would have used the axe. He was remanded for trial in Acton police court. The county hearing was adjourned for a week.
The Duke of Devonshire Chapter Co D E held its annual meeting at Mrs. Peter Smiths home on Tuesday. Members pledged allegiance to King Edward VI I and observed a two minute silence. Reports highlighted a successful year with donations to the King George V Jubilee Fund Manitoulin Hospital Endowment Fund Christmas Stockings Navy League Remembrance Day wreath War Veterans Christmas hampers and milk for schoolchildren. New officers for 1936 include Honorary Regent Mrs W M Cooper Regent Mrs P F Blow Ist Vice Regent Mrs P L W Bearen Vice Regent Mrs J M McDonald Secretary Mrs F E Barr Assistant Secretary Mrs W W Fraser Treasurer Mrs D A Machae Assistant Treasurer Mrs E J Hancock Standard Bearer Mrs J C Matthews Assistant Standard Bearer Mrs A H Bishop Echoes and Educational Secretary Miss M 2 Bennett Press Secretary Mrs A Dills Pianist Mrs Dryden Assistant Pianist Mrs P Smith.
Rev Dr E M Morrow preached on How to Meet Opportunity Sunday evening. He outlined four types of individuals: the man who murdered opportunity the man who met opportunity the man who grasped his opportunity and the man who created his opportunity. The message aimed to inspire young listeners.
The Halton Union Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company held its annual meeting Friday in Town Nan. President W A Lusby led proceedings. losses totaled 15101.70 and assets appeared strong with 29909 policies in force valued at 11354559. Cash on hand near 24000. Over 1000 policies issued in the year. Officer elections re elected W A Sandy with new officers Chas Readhead and Ford. Directors include Duncan Campbell W A Lasby Chua Readhead and others. Secretaries Treasurers Thomas A Moore listed.
February storms lash the area with reports of a dog swept from a bridge on Afurla street and a car blown from a highway, rolling about a hundred yards before stopping. Residents describe the wind as a strong, damaging blow.
J Kerr of Acton was elected as Second Vice-President of the Ontario Fair Association at the annual convention in Toronto. He is Best President and Director of Acton Pall Fair and a former District Paris President. Kerr will fulfill duties in the provincial body as President Murray, Secretary Wright, and Kerr represented Acton Pair at the event.
Elmer Lasby of Acton won the Dominion contest prize for reference books in the National Women's Christian Temperance Union event. He previously earned County and Provincial awards and now holds the top honor. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Hillard Lasby of Main Street, with friends congratulating him.
The Virginia Jubilee Singers drew a good crowd with an eight member lineup. They performed group songs spirituals and solo numbers in a balanced program. Plantation songs in costume did not please. Rev Dr Morrow chaired and introduced the company. The singers also attended Sunday service and contributed to the service of praise.
The Ladies Aid Society of the United Church held its regular meeting Tuesday at Parcnge with President Mrs Symon presiding. Devotions were led by Mrs R L Johnston. The society is divided into six groups to plan the year. Mrs Morrow and assistants served a dainty lunch followed by a social period.
Council discussed War Relief and Miscellaneous accounts totaling 523.78 and auditors noted receipts and expenditures were checked but work unfinished. Agricultural Representative authorized to buy powder for Warble fly treatment. Warble Fly and Bot Fly debates dominated as road upkeep for winter travel was debated. Meeting adjourned to March 2 at 1 PM.
At a Sunday night meeting several residents discussed occupying the vacated shoe factory building and the Hewetson Co agreement. Acton Council considered funding, sound equipment at the Arena, and band plans for hockey nights while police investigate a break in at a public school teachers' room.
Rev John Waldie formerly stationed at Walker s Ontario has received a call to the Presbyterian Church at Arthur Ontario and accepts The move brings Rev Mrs Waldie closer to his parents and friends in the area
Acton Schools Roll of Honor lists student names and scores by class level from Senior Fourth to Senior Primary. Totals per class range around 300 to 600 points with teachers Z Bennett D Forster I Anderson and T FP Wunt noted.
Georgetown celebrated the formal opening of its new $40,000 Post Office on Saturday with Dr. R. K. An denon of Milton presiding. About 200 residents toured the modern limestone structure, hailed as one of Central Ontario’s handsomest, as other officials and local dignitaries spoke including Hughes Cleaver T A Blakelock and J Y W Mackenagle.
The Scout Mothers' Club schedules a meeting at Mrs. W. G. Mason's home on Monday at 6 p m. A storm postpones the Churchill concert to February 19. Acton Radio Club hosts a talk on Amateur Radio in the YWCA basement tonight.
