Acton council met in special session to set workforce hours and pay, approve changes to the hourly rate for A Kirkness Tennant and J Lambert, and raise Alf Duby’s salary by 200 a year. The plan reduces outside supervision, adds weekend duties for three employees at sewer and water plants, and grants eight holidays with five cents an hour wage increase for all staff.
The first 1962 planning board meeting in the council chambers named Hilton Elliott for a second year as chairman. New appointees include Aldo Braida Syd Lamb Ken Hardman and Bert Hinton with Frank Prouse and Ham Peal as council representatives. A three person sub committee will report on off street parking and two commercial lots on Highway 7 at Churchill Road Glenlea may be rezoned to commercial. The board set 2 000 for 1962 planning operations and the first Wednesday each month as meeting night.
Purple and gold streamers and lion head placards set a festive mood as teens danced the Twist and Taney steps at the Lions Club debut in the new Community Centre auditorium on Saturday evening. The Lucernes provided music for a large teenage crowd while skaters moved to arena music outside.
Sixty marching mothers collected door to door for crippled children under Rotary. They brought $642.80 to the Dominion Hotel for Fred Gordon to check in, with Rotarians providing coffee and snacks. The campaign, led by Fin Ledger and a team including Bill Pendleton and Ray Michel, hopes late contributions from those away. Captains represented churches, with lists of canvassers and organizers across Acton.
Local issuer of license plates Jack Hargrave said this week that sales were slow but on par with the same period last year. The report notes steady demand levels amid a cautious consumer climate.
Wilchar Construction of Dundas Ontario submitted the lowest tender of eight bids at 144300 to build the new Federal Post Office in Acton including demolishing the Storey Glove Shop and a home on Bower Avenue. Ottawa Treasury approval required before award. Project under winter works program with local labor, demolition to start soon and occupancy expected within six months.
A 600 ton pile on Main Street is nearly exhausted after continued sanding of icy streets. If cold weather persists, a new supply may be purchased. Halton County and Esquesing Township have run out of winter sand and had to obtain more. Remaining inventory shows 300 tons left from last year and 300 tons added for this year.
Firemen left meals to rush to Cecil Cripps home at Acton R R 2 as icy country roads slowed their trip. They controlled the chimney blaze within minutes, limiting damage to smoke throughout the house.
Two World War I veterans Gil bert Kingsbury and Sam Snow were presented with 25 year league pins Saturday at the Acton Legion Branch 197 dinner. Absent were Ernest E Barr Arthur Padbury and Dr W G C Kenney who will receive pins later. Mayor John Gay spoke of a good town and strong Legion as key aims. Gordon McCutcheon led the after dinner session and praised long time members for the branch’s success. Jim Guan thanked the Legion Ladies Auxiliary for catering the turkey dinner. A sing along closed the evening with Bob Lauteux Ray Agnew and Rudolph Spichvugel. Boer War veteran Fred Coles attended. (Continued on Page Five)
Knox Presbyterian Church moved closer to a Christian Education Centre at its annual meeting. A $5,000 legacy from the Agnes Gould estate was approved to fund the building, with planning to begin not later than May 1963. The minister urged increased stewardship as committees and representatives were formed to oversee the project and church activities.
An adults only skating group formed after crowded sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Rae West named president with Harn Otterbein secretary treasurer and Kensin McPhail membership convener. Membership cards to be issued once rates are set and Sunday ice time plans for February are finalized.
