Halton County voters reelect Mayor Robinson of Oakville and Mayor Irving of Milton for sixth term. Municipal council nominations for Acton, Georgetown, and surrounding townships included multiple incumbents and new candidates across Milton Burlington Esqueling Nassagaweya and Trafalgar townships, with acclamations in several wards and positions across the area.
Relatives report the death of Thomas Arthurs who died at home in Asia recently at age eighty two. He and Mrs Arthurs moved to Manitoba about fifteen years ago and are survived by Mrs Arthurs and several children, including Captain T A Arthurs, a former missionary and chaplain in China and France. A sister Mrs Wm Scott of Limehouse is remaining family member. Funeral services were held yesterday in Ningba.
A Toronto Mrs HB Nelson and City Engineer H B Nicklin along with Mrs Nicklin and Mary of Guelph hosted Christmas gatherings. James H Reen entertained four generations on Main Street. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Reed were among guests including Mrs H H Udlgnall of Toronto and their children. A similar four generation party occurred at Mrs William Sayers Mill Allot with Mr Robert Gibbons and family and Mrs Frick.
At the bi weekly meeting the council approved guaranteeing up to eighty percent of any rink deficit if patronage justifies it. Reeve Mason was named to join the defict committee and a deputy clerk treasurer, Miss Mary Viola Clarridge, was appointed. The council also instructed sidewalk frontage tax charges and deferred the sewage tank issue for later.
The time honored installation of Walker Masonic Lodge officers occurred during the Festival of Br John the Evangelist at the lodge rooms on Tuesday evening. W Bro Dr J A McNiven led the rites with W Bros Dean Leslie D S McTavish N P McLain T H Cook A T Brown B J Hassard W M Cooper and George King assisting. Charles Wilson was Worshipful Master elect as the ceremony emphasized duty, conduct and leadership virtues for the new role. Past Masters jewels were presented to John R Kennedy E J Hassard T H Cook John Wood and Robert Shaw by War Bro Lachlan Grant, with warm thanks to Dr McNiven for his eloquent guidance and a convivial banquet to close the event.
A fierce blaze early Monday consumed the frame livery barn of Councillor Atkinson, killing a horse and destroying a Studebaker sedan. Firefighters arrived promptly, preventing spread to nearby structures. Insurance covers the residence. cause unknown as flames were well advanced on discovery. Sympathy pours in for Atkinson amid heavy losses.
The Knox Church Sunday School entertainment at Town Hall drew a large crowd on Monday evening. The versatile program featured choruses, solos, recitations, dances, a Santa Claus visit, prize distributions, and gifts for the pastor and Mrs Stewart, with Rev Stewart as chairman and multiple helpers and accompanists.
Dominion Bureau of Statistics reports Canada’s leather industry expanded last year with total output reaching a postwar peak of 26,141,217 dollars and a 7 percent gain over the five year average. Prices held steady with 104 tanneries operating nationwide led by Acton based Broadenars Beardmore & Co.
Ridney Horton of Erin pleaded guilty at Guelph Police Court on Thursday to unlawfully being in possession of Hager. He was fined two hundred dollars and costs. Provincial Licence Inspector Grant and Provincial Constable Hoover visited a hotel conducted by Morton yesterday afternoon and emptied all bottles of whiskey on the premises. Motorists faced icy roadways on Christmas Eve and Day with blinding conditions on slippery grades.
