A new stamping machine at the post office began operation Thursday but arrived too late to ease the Christmas mail surge. Letters for out-of-town mail had already been dispatched, though the machine will save hours by reducing hand stamping on remaining mail.
Santa Claus handed out twenty seven mystery gifts on Mill Street as merchants offered a weekly pot and mystery prizes. H Kaminga won nineteen dollars and fifty eight cents with a ten percent coupon and identified the merchant of the week. Twenty seven people received gifts from Santa and the next prize pot stands at one hundred ninety seven dollars.
Local police reported a quiet Christmas weekend with no disturbances or accidents. Authorities urged car owners not to park on town streets overnight to allow snow removal and sanding if weather requires it.
The United Church held three Christmas Eve services with a candlelit choir program arranged by George Elliott. Rev. Gordon Adams offered Scripture passages as soloists Dorothy Simmons Nancy Lambert Frank Bean and Randy Lidken performed. About 200 attended each service and gifts from Sunday school were shared.
Pilot Officer Hon Rolston, home for Christmas, has passed the jet flying course at Gimli Manitoba and will start a six week gunnery course at McDonald Manitoba. He is among four to pass the course and will receive extra wings and a scroll. He joined the Air Force last June. He completed most schooling locally and returned home for the holidays before departing again.
A magistrate court session dismissed several charges under the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor Control Act. An Acton man was convicted of creating a disturbance, fined $10 and costs, and given six months probation for an incident at a local taxi stand early Thursday morning.
St Josephs will hold two Sunday masses starting New Year’s Day at 9 00 and 11 30 am. Overcrowding prompted the change. Georgetown also schedules two masses each Sunday. Father Morgan announced the plan and was aided by visiting clergy. The season featured decorated altars Christmas trees special music and greetings to parishioners. An Acton fire on Church St Friday afternoon was extinguished before firefighters arrived.

The Munt family of Silvercreek lost their home and belongings to a Christmas Eve fire. Georgetown residents, businessmen, and church workers mobilized quickly, raising 365 dollars under Rev Fred Fietcher. Salvation Army provided clothing. offers of shelter and a job came from local supporters. Donations flow through Rev Fietcher or Mr Munt.
Howard Caine former Oakville councillor and CKFH manager confirms plans for a local radio station. He says financing is under way and will apply for a license to the department of transport early in 1956, seeking CBC board support in February.
A Thursday incident on Highway No 25 near Campbellville sideroad caused $350 in damage. Jared Taylor of Milton turned onto the highway from Campbellville while Dieter Claer of Milton, driving south on No 25, skidded on the ice and hit the rear of Taylor’s car.
A surprise gathering was held at the home of Mr and Mrs R L Davidson on Friday evening to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Nearly 30 friends arrived about 9 30 as the couple hosted a social evening and lunch with a cameo locket chain cuff links and tie clip set presented as a gift.
A dozen Halton Junior Farmers and Junior Institute members appeared on Christmas Day television, laughing and singing through an impromptu party filmed in Tor onto the prior Thursday. Three members were interviewed, with the film airing on Country Calendar and a portion broadcast on Junior Farm radio.
Acton in 1955 sets an all time building record with an estimated 1 755 100 invested in construction. Most funds go to residential subdivisions Glenlea and Lakeview with 200 and 240 lots respectively and both extending through winter. Cobble Hill subdivision is now occupied while E Braida plans a 12 lot area and work continues next year. Monthly totals show a year of rising activity with November and December figures reflecting continued development momentum.
Firefighters were awakened early Monday to a blaze at the Mill Street home of Ss Brunelle. Smoke filled the house but damage was limited after investigators traced the fire to an air foam mattress in a basement room occupied by a roomer. Some bedding was damaged.
The Acton Pentecostal Sunday school held its Christmas program on Sunday morning December 25. The program combined the Sunday school and morning service and featured recitations, solos, a Christmas quiz, and songs led by children and young people. A sermon titled Guided by a Star followed, and gifts and candy were distributed to all Sunday school members.
Ontario motorists may purchase 1956 license plates from January 3 with a January 31 deadline. The grace period extends to 1955 plates and applies to operator and chauffeur licenses and trailer permits.
Halton TB Association reports Christmas seal receipts up 15 percent from last year as president R F Bean urges prompt donations. The association plans a county wide mass survey next fall and warns of heavy resource needs. This month Christmas packages were sent to Halton residents in sanatoria and a credit was placed in canteen funds. About 17 Halton County residents are in sanatoria.
