United Church WMS met at the home of Mrs Peter Smith last Thursday with Mrs Caldwell presiding. Rev Fosbury conducted the installation of 1945 officers amid a Christmas music program and presented two life memberships to Miss E Hawthorne and Mrs B Veldhuis.
Materials forwarded from Acton Red Cross headquarters this week include seven mitts, seventeen bed socks, four sweaters, two scarfs, fifteen gloves, ten socks, thirteen pyjamas, sixty girls nightgowns, ten babies nightgowns, two hundred thirteen khaki handkerchiefs, and forty four white handkerchiefs.
Beatrice Creamer daughter of Mrs G Creamer has joined the WHCNS and is now stationed at Cornwallia Nova Scotia.
Erin Township Council meeting at Hillsburg on Friday presided by Reeve Edgar Huxley. Resolutions include school requisitions paid in installments, current accounts to Dec 31 1944, road works funding, tax adjustments with nearby villages, and subsidy receipts of 4180.70. Officials fixed payments to officers, relief and road costs, and approved various passings. A special meeting directed a 3000 bond purchase for the Seven Victory Loan.
Beardmore Co employees held their Christmas party for the children of the Beardmore Employees Association. Santa J M McDonald led the parade with Evan Jones at Beardmore gates, followed by the Acton Boys Band. Bobby Anderson provided comedy as a clown, a trained dogs act entertained, and gifts plus oranges were distributed at the Town Hall despite severe weather.
The Friendly Circle invaded teacher Mixes M. Bennett's home led by Lois Dawkins and Abelnn Priestly carrying a miniature tree. They serenaded Miss Bennett on the porch, placed gifts under the tree, opened parcels with smiles, and gave thanks. A Santa hunt crowned by Alzeria Priety followed, then carols, a piano solo by Doris Wilson, and a luncheon of doughnuts coffee Christmas cake prepared by several hosts before dispersing.
Pte M McMillan has been invalided home from overseas after two and a half years service. He sustained extensive knee injuries from a motorcycle accident in England and is making satisfactory progress at home with his sister Miss Jean and brother Bill in Acton. He served three years in the army, overseas after six months training in Canada.
Pupils and teachers presented a fine Christmas program to a large audience last Wednesday evening. Reverend A W Fosbury and Superintendent A T Brown chaired. The show featured hymns, a play Light In the Window, a playette Choosing a Doll, carols, a Ken Anderson comet solo, Utile play Fables Christmas Party, and The Manger Scene tableau with Silent Night on organ. Santa Claus distributed gifts from the tree to children and adults.
A wolf shot on a Reeve D Gray farm in Eramosa prompted a $35 township bounty plus a $25 provincial reward, part of local claims exceeding $1000 this year. Hunters Wellington and Arthur Stumphs reported the kill near Borkwood as wolves are blamed for sheep losses in the district.
The final 1944 County Council meeting in Milton saw Warden Howard May praised for his courteous, efficient year in office. Members expressed appreciation, noted delays from labour shortages and materials, and adjourned after routine payments and health service discussions.
The last regular meeting of Esquesing Township Council for the year 1944 was held with Reeve C. H. May presiding and Deputy Reeve G. W. Murray in attendance. Bills were approved for Game and Fisheries licenses, court costs, lights, insurance, health and other services, with by-law readings for municipal nominations and elections. Members were paid meeting and mileage fees, road accounts totaling 4005.20 and legal bills of 150.90. A motion of thanks to Reeve May for his impartial leadership was carried.
Arthur Clubine pleaded guilty to careless driving and was fined 25 dollars and costs after a collision between a Gordon Snow truck driven by Clubine and a car driven by Thomas Epstein of Toronto. The December 2 accident near Che Fist Line of Exquesing frost damaged the car. truck suffered no damage. Constable E R Lemon investigated. A separate sitting saw Thomas Burmum of Hamilton plead guilty to stealing a car and tires and receive a year in the reformatory concurrent with other terms.
One of Acton’s largest social events last Friday, the Y M C A Y's Men’s Club Christmas Party drew a strong crowd. Demonstrations on parallel bars and judo by Torontonians from Acton opened the program, followed by the annual Christmas Turkey Draw with several birds won by local and Guelph residents. Lunch, carols led by Chas Kirkness, and a final dance in the gym closed the evening, with Mr. W J Beatty as chairman and J T Fields quoted on enjoying happiness.
