Merchants boost Christmas prize pool from 90 to 200 with nine winners. A clown band will announce the Santa Rama draw at 3 pm on the Y.M.C.A. steps. Vouchers from purchases are collected by coupons before the draw. Previous week saw 25 winners with no duplicates and one out of town winner from Toronto.
The Halton County Board of Education named James W. Singleton to lead the system replacing eight boards. He brings 30 years in education with roles in Burlington as director and over 2,000 teachers across 11 high schools and 74 public schools. His salary is set at 25,000 a year for now.
Grade XI students at Acton district high school released results to the Parks and Recreation Committee. Adults favored the present program 33 yes 24 no while students rejected adequacy. Public school students 206 to 4420 no and high school students 116 to 18 no.
Acton postmaster Gord McKeown notes Christmas card volume is down this year while stamp sales stay steady. He expects heavy business all week with extra workers and seven inbound trucks daily. Ontario reports show a 30 to 40 percent drop in mailing, though Toronto mails surpass last year. A community recreation survey in Acton highlights interest in an indoor pool, movies, sports, and other activities with 55 listed options and two groups of citizens.
A Toronto man, Robert Alex Scott, 27, died when a car driven by Patricia Ann Cooper, 22, left a curve on Ninth Line Esquesing, north of Glen Williams. Cooper sustained hip injuries. vehicle damage listed at 1600 dollars.
A Free Press survey found residents in Glenlea astonished by reports of a rat invasion. Mayor Les Duby cited a complaint about two or three rats near Mowbray Place, but locals denied any widespread problem and blamed potential tunnels from a nearby dump during new housing digs.
Halton County mayors reeves and deputy reeves will meet Toronto Friday with Minister Darcy McKeough to discuss regional government. The October Halton County Council resolution urged provincial move to regional government, without specifying boundaries. The MacDonald Block meeting at Parliament Buildings is expected to be closed.
Reeve George Currie of Esquesing joins Austan Ledwith of Milton and Alan Day of Oakville in the 1969 bid for Halton County Warden. Currie, county councillor and former warden in 1936, argues a comeback is possible after 32 years. Esquesing last held the post in 1936 and has had no warden since 1962.
Mrs George Haggett reports theft of outdoor lights from Westcott Road on Friday the 13th. Police investigate prior attempt to steal a spotlight at the same home and report another theft of Lakeview lights, suggesting more stolen decor exists.
At 10.08 p.m. on Monday December 16 police received a call about a space ship. Red and green flashing lights and a white circle described. Caller refused to identify. Constable Kressler investigated then logged object not encountered and closed the case.
The annual Citizens' Band concert unfolds Sunday night in the high school auditorium. Acton Legion Choraliers will sing and See Petrie will play the accordion, guest artists from last year returning to an increasingly popular event.
