Acton and surrounding streets glow with Christmas decor. A 35 foot tree dominates the Post Office corner as civic workers install lights. Shoppers browse Acton storefronts while homes glow with porch and lawn decorations. Santa and concerts dot the week as local ice and skating plans anticipate colder weather.
Gwen Clarke's Halton's Pages of the Past, originally a series in the Acton Free Press and Canadian Champion, is now bound and selling at $5.00 each through Acton and Milton offices. Limited edition may speedily sell out as Christmas gift demand grows.
Georgetown voters approved two questions on Monday. A $1,500 grant to a Boys Band passed, and a move to pursue natural gas for the community advanced. Jack Armstrong won the mayoral race. S Allen became Reeve defeating A Norton. Deputy-reeve D Sargent topped H Cleave. New council members Leroy Dale and Alfred Sykes joined incumbents G Meilwray, Ted she polls, Irwin le, Harry Hale, and Walter Gray. Councillor T Lyons was defeated. Fred Harreon, So Reid, and Ray Whitmee were also defeated. Whitmee noted public abstention prior to voting due to no run.
Scouters from Acton Milton and Georgetown attended a weekly meeting at St Johns Church Georgetown. Ben Robinson of Hamilton demonstrated colored slides on the World Jamboree at Niagara on the Lake last summer. Scouts used friction fire methods to show fire making despite initial concerns.
Mrs J Creasey wins both bingo prizes and a turkey at the Y's Men annual town hall event. Under Harry Archie club members ran the fundraiser with Charles Kirkness master of ceremonies. Claude Cook oversaw the turkey draw as two Gié hall children handed out tickets to winners across multiple towns.
Four Hamilton men John Baird William Brown Nick Cote and Santo Macaluso were charged with breaking and entering and theft in connection with a burglary of the Simpsons Gears order office. The arrests followed a car fleeing with an unopened safe south of Milton after a pursuit involving Acton Milton and Hamilton police.
A surprise capping ceremony at St. Joseph's hospital last week honored 31 student nurses including Marilyn Marks and Rochelle Henderson of Acton. Dr J O Reilly spoke in the chapel. A chicken dinner with strawberry shortcake followed, with a reception for parents and relatives. The group formed a glee club, and dancing and refreshments concluded the evening.
The event Wednesday afternoon featured youngsters presenting items they learned in their first year. Teachers Mrs. K. Alger and Miss Laughlin guided the hour long program while the mothers attended as guests.
In Acton second election within a week only 26 percent turnout. William Wilson elected deputy reeve by 65 vote margin over Ray Thompson. Final council slate for 1956 includes Mayor Tyler Reeve Hargrave and councilors Lindsay Footitt Brunelle Barbeau Cook Brown.
Two recent head-on crashes in the Acton area caused over 800 in damage with no injuries. On Friday on No. 7 hill west of Acton Betty Dennis of Acton and Fred Kozody of Toronto were involved in a collision totaling more than 600. Sunday a curve on the Acton side road saw another head-on crash with 200 in damage involving Jack Varcoe and Mack Smith.
Children at the Y Santa Claus Christmas party showed awe and excitement as Santa arrived. Mothers attended as the Ladies' Auxiliary runs the nursery class three mornings weekly with good attendance. Gifts and candies were distributed to all the youngsters.
County Council in session approved a consultative committee to review county education and report next year. Three members will be appointed from the High School Area Boards, with plans for county level review of planning and hospitals and a possible mill-levy for hospital capital needs.
Police urge Christmas shoppers to lock vehicles downtown to prevent theft of parcels left in cars. Saturday night two people reported parcels removed from cars on Mill Street. Friday night a prize turkey from the US Men's Turkey Bingo was stolen from an unlocked car off Main Street.
The Music Study group held its final meeting of the year at Mrs. J Danv's home. Members enjoyed singing and games, followed by a turkey dinner and an exchange of gifts presented by Mrs. F Biow and Mrs. E Bilton.
Lakeside chapter LODE met in the Legion Hall on Tuesday evening for annual business grants a special program and lunch. Mrs. S Norton regent presided as gifts were exchanged and Miss Clara Grindley shared slides of a trip to Mexico before refreshments ended the meeting.
More than 60 attended the municipal social night at Hilltop Lodge. Mayor Tyler led the event calling it ladies night and presented bouquets. A turkey dinner followed with formal remarks and dancing afterward.
Acton's Junior D hockey team will play its first game Sunday afternoon in Milton against a juvenile squad from Burlington. The Burlington side has not yet received its schedule from the Ontario Hockey Association.
The Rotary club decided during the business session to sponsor a screening of Hansel and Gretel the day after Christmas. All children under M will be admitted free of charge at the event.
About 150 to 200 people gathered at the Acton post office for the first treasure chest draw tied to the Appreciation Day promotion for local shoppers. W Braams won $7 cash by presenting a 10 percent coupon, plus $5 for identifying the merchant of the week, Holland Shop. Mrs Martin Storey, not present, will receive a $1 shopping voucher. The chest grows in value and stood at $128 this Saturday with coupons drawn from a drum and reinserted if unclaimed.
Acton Women’s Institute held its December meeting at Mrs. Fred Anderson’s Brock Ave home. Mrs. George Fryer welcomed guests and members and the group planned gifts for Halton Manor and Actonians in hospital. Members enjoyed readings, carol singing, a talk on Christmas customs, and a social luncheon.
The North Halton Urban Board met in Milton with delegates from Milton Malton Acton and Georgetown to hear proposed natural gas rate plans. United Suburban Gas Co backed eight inch and six inch lines to Milton Acton and the towns at about 500000 capital with 700000 additional installation capacity. The Rowen Engineers salary was raised to 5400 and the board adjourned to January 17 1956.
