After years of planning and months of work, Acton district curlers unveiled their new curling sink on Churchill Road this week. The first league play was held Monday night while the building remains unfinished, but curlers are delighted. See pictures on.
Acton council sent back to committee a planning board recommendation to approve the Canal Plaza project at Queen Street and Churchill Road. The plan includes six shops and a Beckaos Milk jug store, but planners warned against approval without further study and objections were raised about development aims and place value.
Five Brampton youths faced charges Friday for breaking and entering the Christian Reformed church and damaging windows at the new curling club. Church members spotted the intruders, Cons. Krosaler tracked them to a car stuck in a Churchill Road ditch, and two North Halton officers helped apprehend them.
An out-of-town music group abandoned plans to return to Acton after a Saturday melee at the Dominion Hotel. Seven police officers intervened when a musician drew a knife after patrons' remarks. The performer pleaded guilty in Milton court and received a suspended sentence, prompting fears the group may disband and sell their instruments.
A North Halton Association meeting approved sweeping changes to transform the traditional festival into a broader performing arts event. The plan keeps a non competitive concert after the usual music classes and opens entry to schools that did not sing in prior festivals.
A Sunday incident left a fire truck stuck in an icy ditch at 17 Sideroad near the town line in Esquesing. The Milton and Acton brigades misrouted a call, delaying aid for 45 minutes as firefighters, unable to crest an icy hill, had to push the chief’s car. The Jacksons on 20 Sideroad later reported their chimney fire was out.
An engineering study cites deteriorating walls at the Acton community centre while the main steel structure remains sound. Councillors debate urgency and cost, with one noting a $390 day rate for the report and others stressing immediate repairs to ensure safety.
The Acton Chamber of Commerce distributes a confidential shopping study to about half of local homes to gauge merchant performance on hours, parking, lighting, displays, prices, advertising, rest rooms, and after hours services. It also probes telephone manners, Bell service, commuter rail, and a pedestrian mall for Mill Street.
Mrs. Bob Marshall and granddaughter Lisa spotted a full grown buck with antlers in their Churchill Rd N home Friday afternoon. Charlene, neighbors R L Davidson and others confirmed the sighting as the buck crossed the fence and vanished, with several deer later reported in the area.
Excitement builds as only two draws remain in the Santa Rama promotion. The fifth draw occurs at three o clock Saturday at the Y M C A, with a second draw for Eramoss Flower Mart scheduled at the same time. Entries appear in this Free Press ad across weeks.
Acton police warn shopkeepers to report thefts and use citizen arrests as seven local juveniles face charges for shoplifting. About 400 dollars in goods recovered from stores in Acton Milton Georgetown and Guelph with items still tagged. Two to be charged by the Children's Aid Society. three by Acton police. Two more juveniles charged with breaking and entering theft after a Norton home break-in. Christmas time sees spikes as out-of-towners exploit busy hours.
