Acton council set December 24 for nominations and December 20 for an optional election. Meetings covered arena maintenance, fire brigade staffing, and town hall plumbing. Names discussed include J H Creighton W J Oakes and S M Sinclair with W F Mooney.
Prime Minister eshin uses customary eloquence to affirm Britain will keep parliamentary institutions alive during wartime. Churchill and Greenwood stress America's and Canada's growing aid, while Mediterranean and Allied actions intensify against Italy. Reports detail Italian blockade, Iron Guard purge in Romania, and rumors about King Michael amid ongoing war.
John F Chapman has joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and is stationed at the Manning Depot in Toronto.
The Duke of Devenshure Chapter L. O. DE held its December meeting with Regent Mrs. Barr presiding. Contributions were voted to the Navy League of Canada the Canadian Hospital at Nastk the Educational Memorial Endowment Fund the Canadian Mothercraft Society and a fund to aid British women and children arriving in Canada. Copies of Canada Within the Empire will be placed in Acton Public School and LODE Calendars in surrounding rural schools. Two new members were welcomed. A paper on Current Events by Milas M. Masales was presented by Mrs. W. Cooper and Mrs. R. H. Eliott read the address of a Washington correspondent from St. Paul’s Church Toronto noting Churchill and the European situation.
The Acton Junior Farmers met at Lorne School on November 21. Howard Switzer chaired the session. Jack Stewart performed humor, John Pell sang, and Jack vanGooren read The Tattler. George Elliott spoke on challenges facing young Canadians, with Fred Wright presenting slides from last year’s Farm and Home Improvement Contest. Lunch and dancing followed.
Acton School Board met Tuesday with Trustees VooB Ruindey Jo oH Boyss FOS Blow G A Dilts and Dr Bbat Onis present. Chairman Dr A Jo Buchanan presided as Principal Mocbettch reported book orders status and coal needs. The board set monthly meetings for the first Thursday with January as the first meeting. Finance Committee recommended paying various accounts totaling 2180. Secretar y to approve year end payments after committee checks. No provincial graphs report yet and grants were noted as potentially reduced 15 percent. General thanks to attendees and wishes for the chair’s successor.
A letter from Pte HL W Godfrey of the 1st Canadian MG Holding Unit describes a bombing near his barracks in England. He recounts shattered glass, near misses, and the calm afterward, with mentions of friends and family back home and a note about other remote correspondences.
Bannockburn Literary Society hosted Woodside Society Friday night with a lively spelling contest and program. Frank Young opened the meeting. Clarence Cotes led the check for the event. Charles Laanitta directed a skit. Mrs Adalee Jey and Miss Inna Walton presented a dialogue. Betty Gibson performed solo pieces. Hill Crofts played organ. Dora and Wilma Hansen sang a duet. Ada Finley and W. McIntyre led the spelling round. Bannockburn won with two or three others called but the crowd dwindled. Guests enjoyed lunch and dancing after.
Knox Young People's Guild held a Christmas themed meeting in which Mrs A Smith read scripture, Mildred Lindsay led prayers, and a pantomime by Ines and Ciludus Mc Lehrny Wandelta Smith Ada Thompson and Dork Hansen titled O Little Town of Bethlehem was presented. Jean Bennie Lies McLellan and Mrs RO D'Ulura performed the Christmas story in three parts and musical selections were given before the meeting closed with One National Anthem.
District wide voting produced varied outcomes with multiple elected officials and by laws. In Ober community Erika Village voters chose Roy Peru son and Ernest Teeter among others while Guelph mayor W G Taylor led with 1 799 votes and council members exceeded one thousand ballots apiece.
Voter turnout was light on Monday as Acton residents rejected a by law establishing a two year term for municipal offices. In a closely watched vote the two year term failed by a small majority amid rainy conditions and low registration, with the election featuring contests for reeve and council seats.
Last Friday the Acton District Red Cross Society made another shipment from the Government Building headquarters. The consignment included 20 skirts 60 percent completed sweaters 36 nightgowns and repaired mitts. Volunteers work daily in the busy rooms preparing materials for home sewing.
The Bore How team gains sole second in the Guelph Commerce Howling League with a win over Master Cleaners. Force Electric and others trail as Hatters and Force Team clash next week in a likely title bout. Final scores show Force group edging Masters Cleaners for the important position.
The Ontario Hockey Association reveals Intermediates groupings including Georgetown Milton Guelph Fergus Elora Preston with Art Budiey Hlura as convener. In the Junior series Group No 6 lists Georgetown Milton Burlington Orangeville with GH K Ap pleford Burlington as convener. Acton clubs are not present in these published groupings.
Announcements list activities for December including a Red Cross keno event at St Joseph's Hall at 8 30 pm with 25 cent admission and a United Church Woman's Association baking sale and tea on Saturday at 3 00 pm in the Church School Room. Acton Fire Brigade Annual Dance features Hull's five piece Orchestra with 50 cents for gents and 25 cents for ladies.
