Miss M. Z. Bennett Receives Federation Honor in Toronto
Miss M Z Bennett of Acton is awarded the highest honor of the Federation of Women Teachers Associations of Ontario at its 35th annual dinner in Toronto. An honorary life membership and a certificate were presented along with roses and carnations. Bennett, retiring in 1939 after 32 years at Acton Public School, 19 as principal, also served 27 years as Halton Teachers Institute secretary and remains active in LO D F and the United Church Friendly Circle.

An afternoon service Sunday marked the dedication of ground near the Blue Springs pond for a new Scout Chapel at Acton’s Blue Springs reserve. Rev A So Mitchell led the ceremony with scripture by Cecil Smith and prayers by Wail lam DeHarte. RDF Bourne spoke, with other officials present from York Central, Hamilton, and Ottawa as organist Mrs Mitchell contributed.

Manor Folks Enjoy Sunday Concert at Halton Centennial Manor
Residents of the Halton Centennial Manor enjoyed an afternoon concert on the manor lawn by the Oakville Citizens' Band and Legion Pipe Band. Oakville Legion members and auxiliary ladies traveled to Milton in buses and cars, bands performed for residents including in the care wing, a resident received a silver dollar, and visitors from Milton and Oakville attended with Mayor James Black of Oakville and Reeve I. McArthur among the guests.

Pte Donald James Gunn, reported missing and believed killed, is released from captivity in Korea and taken to Freedom Village. He served as a paratrooper with the Royal Canadian Regiment, with parents in Toronto and former resident of Acton. Eight Canadians freed this week. Gunn was captured May 2 during a Chinese attack.

String Tree Cable To Wool Combing
Electrical power service to the Wool Combing Corporation was improved with the stringing of a new 800 foot tree aerial from Frederick Street to the Wool Combing plant. Power was shut off Saturday morning and reconnected Saturday afternoon. The project replaces power previously fed via Beardmore’s plant and connects to the No. Two substation on Queen Street delivering three phase 4,000 volts.

William J Reid dies in Guelph hospital at 67
Long time Acton resident William Jeremiah Reid aged 67 died August 18 at Guelph General Hospital after a two week illness. He lived at 2% Mil Street and retired after working for Beardmore and Co. Born in Sagraw Michigan in 1886 he moved to Acton and attended George in college in Guelph. He is survived by four sons Harold Reid Peter Reid Gordon Reid and Mervin Reid and one brother Robert L Reid. Funeral services were held August 21 at the Victor B Rumley funeral home conducted by Rev. Anderson with pallbearers James Bobbie Clifford Park McIntosh John Frank Steele L L Mullin and ES Cooper. Interment was at Acton cemetery.
