Changing agriculture in old world France
Paris reports that farmer strikes reveal a shift in European farming as modernization and the European Economic Community alter farming. France loses farmers from 2,320,000 in 1955 to 1,750,000 in 1966, while farm sizes grow. Nations specialize by product, French dairy and grapes rise, Benelux farms focus on eggs and fishery, Germany on potatoes and swine, Italy on olives and cereals. Rural life shifts from village routines to car dependent, home building fields, and radios and TVs. Editor notes Smejda writes on European farming for the paper.
