Ted Tyler Jr presents a four group study plan to create a pedestrian friendly downtown mall in Acton. He outlines highway rerouting, parking, design, and merchant reforms to revitalize Mill Street alongside a Civic Square concept. He urges action to prevent further decline.
The council considered a mall plan with broad support for further study. Councillor Tyler urged inevitability of widening or rerouting Highway 7 while Earl Masales criticized the existing road from Guelph to Georgetown as the worst in Ontario. All members attended the long meeting led by Mayor Duby, Reeve Hinton, Deputy Reeve Oakes, and Clerk Jack McGeachie.
Several residents received extra housing needs questionnaires this week. Answers are mailed to Toronto. About 350 Acton tenants got the forms by mail, while others seeking public rental housing were asked to pick them up at the municipal office. Only one form was issued in the first week, with slightly brisker activity in the second week.
A man in a passing car took a large pot of flowers from the door of Morris Pharmacy on Monday evening. The theft was witnessed and the suspects were apprehended, with Acton O P P filing charges.
About 6 am Saturday a 30 by 40 foot frame workshop garage at Mr. and Mrs. Norman Turner near Churchill burned completely. A newly purchased second hand truck outside the building was damaged for 550. The main house and shop were saved. Acton firefighters extinguished the blaze spread by exploding paint. Turner aided firefighters with his own equipment.
Acton District High School released Grade 13 examination results showing student scores across Eng and Math streams. Notable marks include McCrea Rita I Eng 88 Hist 68 Geog 73 Biol 73 Chem 60 French 65 and Winter Nancy G E Eng 75 Math A 82 Math B 82 Biol 60 Chem 69 French 77 with many others listed for Eng Geog Biol History and languages.
Third and final reading for the town zoning bylaw passed at a Tuesday meeting after a three year process. An amendment designated blocks behind the commercial area as commercial with Mill Church and Bower lines to remain as in prior zoning. The bylaw heads to the minister and a public Ontario Municipal Board hearing in Acton will review it item by item.
County Assessor Robert Beach outlined a proposed Halton county wide assessment plan to Esquesing Township Council. The plan would use an electric data processing unit to compute assessments and set tax rolls, with staff from Halton to work in municipalities and sub-offices in Oakville and Burlington. Provincial grants would aid start up costs while the study group weighs total expenses.
Rev. Peter Brouwer accepted a call to serve as pastor of Beth El Christian Reformed Church and will be ordained in September. He studied at Calvin College and is married with six children. The family moves into the parsonage soon, with plans for a new home if the old one sells. Dirk Veldhuizen and family completed a summer stint as temporary minister in Acton and depart this week.
