Giant pythons draw crowds at zoo train event in Acton
About 800 spectators, including 360 children, visited the African zoo train on a public day. Workers Mike Coxe and Matt Johnson spent two hours in a snake cage mending a drain while a 381 foot giant python loomed nearby. The event, sponsored by the Acton Y's Men, featured exotic animals and music as locals toured the setup and monkeys stole the show.

18 Scouters Attend Blue Springs Training Course
The second annual Scouting training course at Blue Springs Scout Reserve opened Saturday August 8 led by Assistant District Commissioner John A Snow of York Central District. Eighteen Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters attended with Snow a veteran Scouter from Willowdale Ontario. helpers include Arthur L Jackson C Robin Sharp Peter E Woodger and Fred Cummerswall from Willowdale.

A Hal ton District Women’s Institute picnic was held at Lowville Park. Mrs. A Coulson won the disc roll by presidents and secretaries, Mrs. R Anderson received the largest grin, Baby Ashwell was the youngest, and Mrs. Lantz of Acton the oldest. Mrs. Gastle was the best guesser, Edith Powell near the copper jar, and children won tokens in several races.

Changes Underway At Public School
The town public school undergoes changes before September opening. The old bell housed in the belfry is removed with talk of placing it in a cairn on school grounds. The belfry and porch are replaced or worshed with a brick and glass entrance and modern redesign.

Erin township set tax rate at 73.4 mills with divisions and by law
Erin township council approved a total tax levy of 73.4 mills for the year. The breakdown covers county road 0.8, township 16, general school 4.1, high school 8.3, Orton police village 1, Hillsburgh police village 15, Hillsburgh library 2, with a $3 maximum per assessment. Additional assessments apply to school areas and union schools totaling multiple mill rates for areas 1 and 2, U.S.S No. 2, Erin village and township, and Caledon Erin, plus other lines. By-law prohibits injury or obstruction to rivers and streams with penalties. Payments were authorized to Halton Mutual Fire Insurance Co and to Acton and Erin treasurers for fire department services and road accounts.
