A local paper advertises The Good Will Club contest with twenty prizes including two cash awards. Readers collect coupons on every purchase to vote, with votes costing nothing and 25 votes per 25 cent purchase. Names of contestants are listed and next week’s standings will run in the paper.
A ballot box will be placed in Tre Pax Paris Office where votes are deposited. Contestants must submit returns every Monday at 12 noon. A weekly total record will be kept and the standings announced in Thursday's Tre Pax issue. Ask for coupons.
A coroner jury found 17 year old Ella Hilson died from shotgun wounds inflicted by unknown persons. Crown Attorney W I Dick protested the verdict saying no evidence supported self harm. Dr L M Stuart who performed the post mortem doubted suicide and noted the shotgun’s placement and angle.
Two armed bandits robbed George Hoover and Ambrow Honover of about 700 dollars near Struthers Ohio. They forced the brothers from their car on the Lake Shore highway and drove them toward Halton and Pre Counties before abandoning the vehicle near Pinegrove Park. The elderly George Hoover was struck with a pistol barrel during the robbery.
Last week's winner is Pasteurised Milk. Jack Hollinger receives the award this week after calling at Tag Fars Paras Offie. The poem for this week appears on Page Five with a due date of 4:30 Saturday afternoon at Tux Fare Press.
About 700 attended a Park picnic in Acton by Local 212 of the Guelph Iron Moulders. The program featured sports and ball games in the afternoon. The standout was journeyman moulder George Ritchie with 54 years in the moulding shop. A jaz bard from Guelph supplied music for the event.
George McIver, formerly vice-chairman of the Canadian Wheat Board, is named chairman after J M Murray resigns. The board will maintain the fixed price of 87 4a bushel with purchases continuing unless prices drop below 00c a bushel for No 1 Northern at Fort William.
Beardmore & Co employees and families enjoyed a Saturday picnic at Edgewood Park with music, swimming, races, and a 9 to 1 softball win by Tight Leather. Four to five hundred attendees participated in races, games, and a large supper, with local results for horseshoes, races, and various children’s events listed.
Law Construction Co of Toronto won the Halton County road contract for about 40 000 square yards of iron cast bituminous pavement. Four and one quarter miles will run Baquesing Township from Hornby to Ashgrove linking Ashgrove highway to Stewarttown. Kilbride village will receive about one mile of paving in Nelson Township. Total price around 620000.
Nassagaweya Township Council met on Wednesday August 4 with all members present in the Reeve's chair. The council read and adopted last meeting minutes and heard correspondence from the Ontario Hospital Woodstock Department of Highways Bell Telephone Workmans Compensation Board and local residents requesting grants to Acton Fall Fair and Halton Agricultural Fair. A 820.00 donation to Acton Fall Fair and Halton Agricultural Fair was approved. Accounts totaling 1399.62 and 645.16 plus various fees were approved. The tender of D P Henderson for shingling the Township Hall and Council Chamber at 295.00 was accepted and a tax rate by-law for school sections was passed before adjourning.
Alfred Harrington of Guelph fell from a grandstand seat at Acton Park while watching a Guelph Moulders plate. He landed on his right arm breaking it just above the wrist. He received treatment on site and X ray confirmed the fracture.
The Toronto Daily Star editor Joseph T. Clark died at his summer home in Go Home Bay Ontario after a heart attack. He was 70 and had a 57 year career in newspapers, starting as an apprentice printer at 13. He suffered a prior heart attack four years ago and is survived by three sons and a married daughter.
The Acton Public Utilities Commission discussed new hydro rates effective from September. Reeve McCutcheon and Chairman Kerr attended as the secretary motioned payment of several accounts to local suppliers and utilities.
Acton journeyed to Milton for a league fixture and a 6 3 loss in a game marred by errors. Ham Lambert pitched for Acton as Murray Exard shut them down, with Milton building a three run lead and Acton scoring later but falling short. Box score notes include base hits by Clement Lambert Walters and team miscues leading to Milton’s win.
A 1937 Ontario note states the Second Line from Milton to Acton has been approved by Order in Council and route plans filed. Deputy Minister R M Smith reports work may start in two to three weeks with culverts and preliminary work this summer and fall. paving not until next year. Local registry will hold plans. delays cited due to missing signature by Mr McQuesten.
The Dublin Women's Institute held its July gathering at Mrs D MecDougell's home with President Mrs A Near presiding. Members heard current events from Mrs Mc Gregor, a health talk by Mrs Way McGlaughlin, and a presentation on a well equipped clothes closet with demonstrations by Mesdames Storey McGregor Anderson and Hracken. Miss D Gibbons RN of Acton spoke on bathing and newborn care, followed by thanks from Ming Somerville and a luncheon to conclude the meeting.
Haruki Yanch and Kenneth Champaign of Burlington suffered critical injuries when their car collided with poles near Hornby on the Georgetown Milton road while returning from the Volunteer Firemen's Convention. Yanch died at Guelph Hospital. Champaign remained unconscious with internal injuries days later.
Ernest Sigaworth pleaded guilty to perjury and received a one year suspended sentence from Magistrate L J Bull in Milton after a defence plea by LeRoy Dale of Georgetown. The case followed a fatal April 10 motor accident near Acton involving Lynne Baines of Greaton, with no blame found at the coroner’s inquest.
Eramosa Township council met in Rockwood with full attendance. The meeting approved a $25 grant to the Provincial Plow Match to be paid to the Bra men’s Association treasurer and added to the local grant for the first day prizes. A $2,000 grant for the Acton Fair was approved, plus $20.90 for Ferrous Fair Pull and related ditch counts. Other motions covered legal lines, drainage forms, and total payments of $1,097.39 before adjournment for September 13.
