Councillor Ted Tyler told council he plans a motion at the next meeting to draft a bylaw closing Mill St from Main to John 20, paving the way for a shopping mall on the two Mill Street blocks.
Councillors debate minimums and cost as 1400 square feet rule shifts. Johnson and Fay push for 1350 feet with Best pressing for capital levy bylaw. Council adopts 1350 square foot minimums and considers a $200 per suite levy on new apartments while delaying broader levy until subdivision plans are registered.
Mayor S G Childs questioned who should receive sump pumps as council delays decision. The council had approved back water valves and pumps for homes affected by sewage backups, with Woodward Avenue resident among applicants. The matter was referred to the sewer committee for report and study.
The Town of Milton withdrew its challenge after Milton District High School Board officials appeared at a meeting. The board agreed to buy 4 968 acres from Cecil McCann to expand its site in Oakville, with road extensions and a future road dedication needing Oakville Committee of Adjustment approval and municipal dedication.
The Ontario Department of Transport safety checking station processed 292 cars in Milton last week and found at least two unsafe for driving. Last year 280 cars were checked with 84 passing tests. Cars were tested on 38 points including ball joints and brakes. the station operated in Milton Plaza from Tuesday morning to Saturday evening.
A spokesman said work to widen and repave Highway 25 from the MacDonald Cartier Freeway to Acton will take about three months. The project includes a two foot widening between the 401 Cloverleaf and Campbellville Sideroad and will use a surface similar to the present one.
Premier John Robarts again declines to meet Milton Council over their annexation dispute. Spooner, Minister of Municipal Affairs, notes Ontario Municipal Board postponed further hearings. Council members offer to push ahead with delegation, lunch, and even a bottle if needed.
Milton council was told Monday that the town hall renovation and the new works building at the sewage treatment plant site exceeded their $80,000 allocation by $14,804.11 on a total project of $94,804.11. The overrun details include debenturing $71,878.08 and Winter Works benefits of $13,549.50. A federal provincial borrowing forgiveness clause amounted to $9,376.53.
