Brigade Battles Two Grass Fires in Ontario Rural Areas

Two grass fires in Acton area rural zones drew the brigade for rapid action. A blaze behind the Melancon home west of Eden Mills went out of control Sunday afternoon as cars lined the highway to view. Earlier on Wednesday a grass fire at R. Mac Donald’s farm near Esquesing 4th Line threatened a newly built house before being contained. Firefighters from George and others responded to the outbreaks.

A rush of Acton fishermen crowded the Bronte tract on Lake Ontario shores this week. Rubber booted men scooped smelts from the dock with nets and even by hand, filling bush els as nets broke under the weight.

Parks Board Passes 155 to 6 Over 90 Per Cent Stay Home

Lena Braida, 23, daughter of Mr and Mrs Abele Braida of 173 Main Street South, has won two scholastic awards. She received a Shell Oil Company Research Fellowship worth 2300 dollars and an Ontario Research Foundation scholarship of 1000 dollars. Braida graduated in 1955 with a chemical engineering degree from the University of Toronto and is pursuing a Master of Applied Science and Engineering, with plans for a doctorate. Born in Acton, she attended local schools. Acton friends offer congratulations.

Eighth Gas Well Roars In Friday For Acton Firm

A new eighth gas well opened last Friday in Esquesing township drilled by Acton based Anthony Gas and Oil Explorations Ltd. The No 8 well on the English farm near the MacDonald and Moore lands could yield about a million cubic feet per day. The site drew many visitors and the cap release produced a loud hiss. The company recently struck a long life Trenton lime pay sand and has plans to expand drilling with additional rigs south of Acton. Officials noted a firm gas supply contract to United Suburban Gas Co. Ltd starting July 1.
