Sixth Father and Son Banquet Draws Record Crowd at Y

An overflow crowd of 185 fathers and sons attended the sixth annual Father and Son Banquet at the Acton Y last Thursday evening. Additional seating was added in the new Teachers corps lounge as 30 more places were needed. Don Groff of the Kitchener YMCA spoke on What’s in a Name, with film strips illustrating YMCA principles. The program featured Grace, welcomes, toasts to sons and fathers, a sing along, and magic acts by the Y Wizard club before the speaker. Meals were served, dessert included pie and ice cream, and the event was hosted by the Acton Y’s Men’s Club.

Fishing Contest Returns This Spring

Tennis Club plans include new tapes and nets

The Tennis Club met Monday at the Grahams home to discuss plans for the coming year. A euchre program is planned, fees will remain the same, and a nominating committee was appointed to arrange a slate of officers.

Home and School Asks Piano Purchase at Final Meeting

The final meeting of the public school Home and School Association focused on a committee to arrange the purchase of a piano for the school auditorium. Milton Watson, former Acton student and Hamilton high school principal, spoke about summer camps with colored slides. The evening closed with a square dance and an election of the next year’s executive: Cyril Taylor as president, Wes Wolfe as past president, Mrs. R. R. Parker as vice president, Mrs. J. Calder as secretary, Chas. Landsborough as treasurer, with several others on the executive.

Council tackles dump area abuse and gas survey

Council rapped improper dumping and haphazard burning near the Third Line dump as a fire hazard and eyesore. A plan to fix the site includes possible fencing and a con two con ferencer? or incinerator idea. A Brampton man questioned sewer tender decisions while natural gas supply potential was discussed with United National Gas Co Ltd, and council planned further data.

Contract Awarded for Addition to Acton School

The North Halton District High School Board awarded Mackenzie and Son of Acton a contract totaling 36 690 dollars for a three room addition to Acton High School. Sub contractors include Sanitary Plumbing and Heating of Fergus. Total sub contracts amount to 8303.17 dollars. Completion date set for September 5. Seven tenders were submitted with top bid 58 750 dollars. two lowest bidders were Acton contractors Jones and Van Gils at 38 000 dollars. Construction to commence immediately with inspections planned for Acton and Georgetown next week.

Acton public school board and North Halton district add nine staff for next fall. New hires include Carl Prellusch Cyril Buchanan Mrs Watergette from Acton High School and several new teachers from Kitchener Mountview Arkel Wellington and Wallaceburg reflecting regional staffing changes.

Grant of 2500 for Work County Aid for Retarded Children

Halton County Council approved a 2500 grant to the Oakville District Association for Retarded Children after a brief presentation by Brig. James Roberts.
