Concurrent notes recount emigration plans of German colonists from southern Russia and local incidents along Montenegrin frontiers.
Readied celebrations mark Guelph anniversary set for Monday the 23rd with a proclaimed town holiday. Invites issued to Sir A Sty and Mr Justice Galt as descendants of the founder. A grand procession includes local residents and first years cattle handlers. Excursion trains to run on Great Western and Grand Trunk lines. Town illuminated at night.
Base Ball Notes report from Guelph shows at least twenty nine binge ball clubs operating this season. Georgetown Young Canadian era reorganized as the Red Stockings with officers named for the year: R. Bennett president S. Huston vice president G Roe secretary J. W. Morgan treasurer Wm. Godfrey captain A. Grieve John Guin and Henry Thompson on field committee.
The Lennox and Addington hotel keepers held meetings after the Dunkin Act vote and resolved to close all hotels and yards on May 1. They will dismiss boarders and discontinue boating or train attendance with no accommodations offered at any hotel.
A terrible fire at the six story Southern Hotel in St Louis this week killed and injured many as flames enveloped the upper floors. Losses are estimated around 750000 with escape routes described as inadequate as frantic efforts ensued.
Henry Macdonald was brought to Ottawa Hospital with both eyes gouged by Morgan in an Opengo district spree two weeks earlier. He is left blind for life after Morgan and a second assailant attacked him following a quarrel. Morgan is jailed in Pembroke. Also a fire at St George destroyed the Bell and Son foundry and offices causing heavy losses.
Austin Humphrey was sentenced to be hanged on May 22 for the murder of Frederick Apple. James Bethune argued insanity for the defence. Grigga, charged with manslaughter for killing his father in a drunken quarrel, was acquitted after a death caused by a fall was deemed not due to intentional act.
