Acton Municipal Council calls an organizing meeting at Town Hall to mobilize voters for the April 27 referendum on government wartime pledges and manpower. Officials urge every vote to be registered and emphasize immediate action to back Canada's war needs and deter aggression.
The April meeting of the Ospringe Women's Institute elected officers led by President Mrs T Aitken and Hon. President Miss Emma Baldie. District duties for S S No 13 Erin and Red Cross work were discussed. Members served luncheon after the business session.
Erin Township Hillsburg council awards a gravel contract to Hayward Construction Company at 8 cents per yard and appoints Mr. Bibert Logan as constable. The meeting also notes a weed inspector change and a $25 Hillsburg Horse Show donation plus township expenditures and adjourns to May 1.
Miss Margaret Isobel Harrison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Harrison, married Herbert John Windeler at Howard Park United Church Halifax clerg y officiated with Rev W Gladstone Watson and Rev Dr C A Williams assisting. The couple's reception followed at the bride’s High Park Blvd home.
Jammie Jones son of Mr and Mrs W Jones Acton graduates with bomber pilot wings. The class completed training at the Service Flying School in Kolar Brantford.
The Wartime Prices and Trade Board opens a sub regional office in Guelph on Monday April 20. W Harold McPhillips says the third side of the customs building will house the office with C Valentine Force of Acton as local representative. Information on price ceilings and laws will be available and violations can be reported. The region also includes Orangeville Fergus Mount Forest Harriston Elora Arthur Grand Valley and Drayton along with Guelph. Owen Sound office planned soon.
At the Halton Garage Operators Association regular meeting Joe Whitham of Acton was elected secretary to succeed A Benton. The program, funded by Electric Auto-Lite Co., featured two sound pictures Auto-Lite on Parade and Tenlion Emplacorat. The firm also donated two door prizes. A social half hour and refreshments followed.
The Eramosa Township Council met at Rockwood Town Hall with full attendance. They accepted Oscar M Nickel's travel resurfacing bid at 59 cents per yard pending Highway Department approval and urged dog owners to follow the Live Stock Protection Act to prevent sheep losses. A public meeting on Township School Boards was scheduled for May 11 with the School Inspector to speak.
A special Loyalty Sunday is set for April 26 at the United Church. The 11 o’clock service will unite congregation and school with visiting singers, bright hymn singing, and a congregational processional. The Joash chest story will frame temple repairs, with Ladies on Whit fulfilling an important role.
Walker Lodge celebrated an official visit by D D G M J C Luschinger honoring two long serving members. Wm Cooper received a life membership and J A McNiven was presented a fifty year jewel plus life membership, with retirements noted. A large banquet followed with remarks on lodge work and a moment of silence for departed brothers.
The Duke of Devonshires Chapter LO.D.E. met April 1 at Mrs P Smiths home with Mrs Racer presiding. Business was disposed of and plans for September tag day discussed. Members voted on plebiscite and war badges were presented to members’ sons in service.
A fragment from Acton and district Red Cross rooms details a large knitting shipment. Items include mitts wristlets neck warmers knee pads sweaters and stockings. The list shows community support and wartime relief efforts.
Customs returns at Acton show gains over several years with 1942 figures totaling 299 215 80 not a new high. Middleton notes last year’s 207 923 60, a 97 202 20 improvement. First quarter 1942 totals 56 240 90 versus 71 053 65 in 1941, indicating a smaller year so far.
The Dublin Literary Society held its last regular meeting of the season in the school with President Mr Burkholder presiding. Mr Cutts led a well rendered program featuring piano solos by Margaret Somerville Dorothy Frank and recitations by Mr Burkholder followed by a Holland talk and a National Thanksgiving song. The meeting closed with Auld Lang Syne and a luncheon.
Robert J. McPherson longtime Acton Chief of Police and Municipal Officer died suddenly in his sixty third year after a heart seizure in the night. He served Acton for seventeen years and was later appointed Justice of the Peace. He was active in the Fire Brigade School Board Knox Church and Lodge LO.C.F. survived by his wife Blanche son Eugene and Dorothy with three brothers and one sister.
Acton council reviewed a modernized by-law and its eighth finance report. More action included paying accounts totaling 5 613.87 and appointing James Moore as assistant to Chief Harrop. Auditors’ 1941 report remained outstanding and a relief notice from Toronto was returned.
Churchill Women of the church and Official Board met at the Butler home last Wednesday. After devotions led by Mrs Kerr Mrs Griffin and Mrs Freeman, members planned activities including a quilting and a decision to skip a baking sale this year with each member contributing. Delegates to the Milton convention were named as Mrs Butler and Mrs Freeman.
Mr and Mrs Alexander Dobbie of Hamilton and formerly of Limehouse celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Scott homestead. Relatives gathered for a luncheon and a purse of gold was presented. Their sons Frank and William attended with the bridesmaid Mrs Robert Lane and groomsman Robby Whoe. The couple were Presbyterians and married by Rev of Edge Acton.
A Sunday evening service at the United Church features Miss Marjorie Pickett of Brantford delivering an illustrated address about the Amsterdam World Conference of Youth. She attended as a Cannada delegate and will showcase slides from photos she took en route to the conference.
A local note from Adelaide reports a claim of the longest grapevine in the state. The vine is said to be 2H3 feet long, about 80 years old, and yields WW pounds of lady's finger grapes annually.
Activities include rummage sale at St Alban’s Parish Hall on April 25, potluck supper at United Church on April 29, social and dance by Carry On Canada at Lorne School on April 26, Chinese Checkers at United Church April 21, Euchre at Y M C A April 22, dance at Town Hall Acton April 24 for the Happy Gang, plus a comedy The Improper Henry Proper at Limehouse Church April 23. Admission varies, all welcome.
