Budget chairman F G Oakes proposes 69.8 mills for residential and farm and 77 mills for industrial and commercial taxpayers an overall rise of 7.6 mills for residents and 8.4 mills for business. Key increases come from public and high school budgets with detailed party shares and township allocations.
Sculptor Andrew Drenters, also known as Andreas, displays farm machinery sculpture at Gaslight Gallery in Kitchener along with Katja Jacobs prints from Toronto. The two man show runs through April at a converted coach house setting near a former mansion. the Moose sits on the driveway verge as a landmark. Drenters’ brother Yosef is commissioned for Expo 67.
Budget chairman F G Oakes delivers the 1966 Acton budget noting reduced town general levy and large uncontrollable costs from school boards and the county. He calls it modest and conservative, cites small department cuts, adds funds for extra O P P officer a new garbage packer cemetery work road improvements development committee and staff raises. Councillors review detailed pages and commend the budget team and town staff.
Early Acton budget papers circulate this week showing reductions across departments with schools taking a notable cut. Officials say the plan tightens city finances ahead of tax season while preserving essential services for residents and students.
The Free Press notes that Andrew's sculpture was photographed for the paper previously and mentions his past role as an instructor with Acton Figure Skating Club.
Acton committee of adjustment approved a minor variance on lots Wil and 12 on Long held Road for Joe Gitlo to build three homes. A six acre sale by Tony Sevnnck near Acton Boulevard to Cranston Griese was postponed with a subdivision plan proposed by Griese. The hearing resumes April 21 with a decision to be issued.
An April 9 two car crash at the Mill and Main intersection totalled an estimated $85 in damage. Patrick Nolan of Georgetown drove north on Main Street while Charles Griese of Acton RR 2 traveled south. both vehicles failed to yield as they attempted turns east on Mill. Constable Peter Campbell of the Acton OPP Detachment investigated the incident.
After weeks of delay the Acton council approved the 1966 budget and resumed regular business. Daylight saving time was approved with clocks moving ahead on April 24 and back on October 30. The by law for Fairview cemetery was settled and adjustments made to staff salaries and allowances. Council plans travel to the Ontario Municipal Association conference in Lindsay May 13 and 14. Underground wiring for Lakeview subdivision was approved with an 84 527 30 cost to be amortized over 20 years. Plans for 5.8 acre land subdivision and sale to Cranston Griese proceed with engineering input. Land separation request remains before the Committee of Adjustment. Four residents receive 32 in deposits. Centennial Library project discussion set for April 2 with the architect.
Engage Stars The Rhythm Pals, famed Tommy Hunter show entertainers, have been engaged to headline the Lions Western show this spring. More plans for the popular event were discussed at the club meeting this week.
The O.PLP Detachment investigates a breakin at Murray Scayne’s Elizabeth Drive home where a west window was forced and entry gained in a downstairs room. A second attempted entry at neighbor Vic Morris’s residence via a back window failed. no items reported missing.
Building Products In New Head Office Building Products or Canada Limited, parent of Micro Plastics, will move to a new head office in downtown Montreal about June. The IBM building at Place Ville Marie will host senior officers and management now in the Royal Bank Building and Ville LaSalle plant staff. Divisions include building materials, pipe and microplastics, flooring and executive sales with financial accounting and planning departments also relocating. The move aims to centralize head office functions with better contacts, service facilities and room for expansion.
Beardmore's Big Ben Tannery will start the work day at 7.30 am during spring and summer, with whistles at 7.25 am and 7.30 am. The day ends at 4.30 pm, followed by a five minute warning whistle. The noon signals remain at 11.55, 12, 12.85 and 1 o'clock.
