Acton council approved the finance committee’s budget plan setting the residential tax rate at 2 mills and commercial at 63 mills for the year. The motion includes the first payment of 50,500 on a 1,650,000 debt and outlines pool and park funding from provincial grants and park charges.
Mayor W. Cook and Council discuss a 919,900 land purchase from Joe Stewart and debt funding. Finance committee warns current revenue must cover the deficit as plans seek debentures, with road projects and park needs debated alongside school and public works budgets.
The Acton council held a long adjourned meeting to discuss an Ontario Municipal Board hearing about an industrial waste treatment plant. Tempers flared as council debated committee makeup and attendance with mayor W Cook, councilor Rachlin, and others, ending with a motion to extend the meeting to clear the air.
Constable Mo Harness of the local OPP detachment investigated a Sunday incident on Main Street involving a vehicle driven by Joe Wilding of Michigan and a parked car struck by Casper Dana of Acton. Damage totaled about 430 to the Wilding vehicle and 100 to the pauw vehicle. a careless dusting charge was filed against Wilding.
Halton voters chose Sandy Heat of Georgetown as federal candidate in Ottawa on Monday with 34 349 votes out of 40 487 eligible voters in a sunny polling day. He led by a wide margin as celebrations began with supporters and motorcades through Malton and Acton before returning to Georgetown.
Police investigate an accident on Arthur Street involving cars owned by A. Varey and L. Bulmer of Acton. Constable B. Moreau leads the inquiry as officers review details.
